I'm interested to know how many ASF members have teenagers who are attracted to having various bits of themselves studded with metal? (or ASF members themselves, even?)

Personally, I find it pretty awful and have yet to find a teenager who can adequately explain why they want to do it.

Like tattoo's it is the "in" thing at the moment. Just like I phones and I pads the only difference is it doesn't matter too much if you buy the latest gizmo's but when you get a tattoo or a piercing you really need to think about it as it stays with you especially those plugs in the ears that stretch the ear lobe.

Interesting topic Julia.
I would like to share that our son used to put stud on both ears.
He has been asking to put it when he was about 18. I advised him that I do not like it howevr he was free to exercise his rights to put studs because he was 18. To my great satisfaction he did not exercise his rights to put stud to violate dad's wishes.

later on I noticed I was a bit backward and there were many celebrities (David Beckam ?) who wear studs. There is a class of school where I believe gays wear studs on one year to differentiate themselves before their prospective partners. It will be totally wrong to judge any one because they wear studs on one ear.
Any way after a good amount of investigation and passing the cooling off period, on his 21st birth day both me and my wife presented him a pair of diamond studs. He was over the moon and wore it for two years. I have now noticed after wearing for two years he does not wear them any more and it was voluntary action.

I think wearing studs like putting tattoos. To make a difference and sort of identity crisis. Michael Clark is a unique one who has tattoos all over !

I think at the teen age the young adults want to express themselves. Some adopt to smoking, some take substance, some leave universities, some become direction less and few want to wear studs.

There is no right or wrong answer on the logic or psychology behind wearing studs by male youth.

Also when these young adults go to their jobs with peer presence and business attires they realise to take off the studs.

However I have no logic when I see homeless young adults pierece their eye brows, nose, tongue, few places on ears. All i know forget about equality in jobs, if some one comes with pierced tongue or eye brows it is difficult to get a job in a corporate office.

As a parent this is my own thoughts and every one entitled to their thoughts.

My 14 yr old daughter keeps harping on getting her naval [belly-button] pierced.
I'm in two minds as to what to say, as I'm already pretty much saying no to most things.

i.e. You're not going to that party...Not going to date that boy..You're not going out in that dress...you're not stay'n out past midnight etc.

I'm not sure whether I should compromise on the piercing?
Seeing as she's doing well at school & homework etc....When some of her peers are right little tarts.
Every time I say "no" It's like I'm the vilan, & her peers are more appealing..like playing a game of moral tug-o-war?

His tough stickers don't make him any more of a man and certainly not unique. He isn't a Maori or Island Tribesman. Just a plain whitey put on a pedestal.

There is a bad ritual with the Aussie cricket selectors that if you are out of form, your position is cemented. With Clarke they went one better and gave him the captaincy.

Seems your son went through peer group stages of growing up and is becoming more confident within himself now and developing his own persona.

Teenagers want to differentiate themselves from the people they dont want to be, and be more like the people they do want to be. They will not always be teenagers though so its pretty good practice to try and prevent your unruly youth from doing anything too permanent to himself.

Facial Tattoo's do not fly well in job interviews.

Yep Julia, I feel the same way. My children and their friends werent interested and I am glad that they havent been.

The piercing on the tongue is the most annoying IMO and you can see they are having trouble talking. How frustrating.

I had 4, many many years ago.
2 in my left ear (middle and top), tongue and left nipple.
Took them all out and there are no visible marks (or, they are very hard to spot). So, l came through that unscathed.
Kids/teenagers will be kids/teenagers. Let them do what they want.

Now, tattoo's on the other hand. That's a different kettle of fish. l have none. Thought about it, but l know myself and change my mind every other week, so, so far have resisted tats. If they had ink that faded in a number of years, sure, l would get one. But, as it is now, no way. Bugger all that laser surgery etc etc.

I believe it's a bit like teenage smoking. It becomes like a peer image. If you don't join the others you become an outcast.

Because I saw the photograph I posted in the weekend paper and I pretty much couldn't believe anyone would actually look like that voluntarily.

She has a few different colours/styles but now she works in a professional environment she has to have a clear one.

I have always been curious about tongue piercings - can't imagine why anyone would put themselves through what must be extreme pain and discomfort. The tongue is so sensitive! It must also be very unhygenic.

I worked with a girl once who had a tongue stud. I was morbidly fascinated by this wretched silver ball in her mouth and could not drag my eyes away from it when speaking to her. At the same time I felt complete revulsion! I must have appeared awfully rude!

I dont know anyone with any weird piercings and I certainly dont know why anyone would want to do so.

I mean yeah the general ear and maybe a few other bits and pieces may look good as a fashion item but seriously the ones that have close to their whole body done... Whats going on in their mind.

But at least piercings can be removed and the body will recover in most cases, unlike tat's which is generally a life long damage.

I dont see what is the big deal. I dont have any myself but dont care if others do.

Obviously if they are in strange areas that will effect societys perception of them, but as others have said, you can easily take them out and most people wouldnt even know you used to have them.

Sounds like you have a nice daughter.
When my daughter was 14, my wife and I made a couple of decision that went our daughters way. 15 years later my daughter has completed uni, married and has 3 little cowboys.

Your daughter's scholastics results, may indicate she is entitled for a decision to go her way.
Just a thought.

Miner - loved the story! Very interesting.

Without coming across rude or anything of that ilk -Piercings; like everything else; is a statement. Some or symbolic, some are fashionable, some are religious...yadi yada...top down people get piercings/tattoos/hair colour or cut/dress differently for a multitude of reasons...just embrace society and find the girl with the tongue ring (kissing wonders! )
