What would you take to a desert island?

Maybe we need a bit of a fun diversion from all the political and financial stuff.

A few years ago we had a thread on the above topic which was interesting and entertaining, so perhaps we could try it again now that we have so many new members.

Scenario: you will be isolated on an island, in a warm climate, with no means of transport to facilities.

You may take three items with you. These may be human, animal, or inanimate.

The island has a good source of fresh water, but no food other than a few berries and some coconuts. There are shade trees and low growing vegetation.
The sea contains the occasional shark, and there are poisonous spiders and snakes.

If taking literature or music, it would be good if you could specify exactly what, and why.

There's a few ways to seriously look at this...one of my first thoughts is.

• 300 kilos of Maui Wowie (in 30 large air tight glass jars)
• 10 Kilos of cigarette papers (in 2 air tight jars)
• 10 kilos of matches (in 2 air tight glass jars)

I'm only saying this because on Julia's island life aint gona be much fun so the drugs will make it alot easier to deal with the hopeless reality...and at lest you could maintain a fire while you await the inevitable...and the drugs will help distract you from the hunger etc.

Ill give it some more thought.

1. Matches for fire
2. Fishing Rod for food
3. Machete for food, building shelter and killing animals to eat, aswell as any pirates that stray onto my island to bury treasure

My answer is
1. Kate Beckinsale
2. Condoms - don't want Kate's illegitimate children on a desert island
3. Golf club & balls - gotta practice the driving inbetween chopping Kate

GOSH Julia .... this can be taken so many ways but I think I will take it literally.

1) A desaliniastion plant - without water you are dead within 3 days. Now this is assuming we do not have fresh water on this mythical island? Remember we are on an island so therefore there must be salt water I can turn into freshwater. Now before everyone squawks about electricity blah blah blah you can get TABLETS that desal into freshwater. OK???

2) A fire source of some description. Thinking neverending flamethrower kind of fire making piece of apparatus. Also a source of amusement burning things with overkill.

3) The internet. Just enough to keep me amused.

So I have water, fire to cook with and a source of amusement. Very practical I know but that's about it. If you want a fantasy 3 items response I will reserve my right to think more carefully about this as I will be spending a very long time on this Island. (and it is my fantasy)

I am sure some army tales around a warm fire would be interesting too.

This is to ensure my rescue. My wife can smell a $100 bill from 21000km, which just happens to be slightly over 1/2 of the earth's circumference. She will stop at nothing to get it.

I shall then hijack the rescue vehicle and drop her off at david jones on the way home.

Item 1. : An axe.
With an axe I can build and maintain shelter. If there are snakes on the island then there will be warm blooded animals so I can make hunting weapons too. From the sea, oysters can be picked & fish/crabs/crayfish trapped or speared. (No whaling though )

Item 2. : One seed potato.
With my cooked meat I will be eating potato either baked in jacket, mashed in empty coconut shell or fried on a thin flat rock. I would have preferred a variety of seeds but an item is an item.

Item 3. : A flint.
Of course one needs fire to cook.

You could also use his glasses to create a fire. No need for the magnifying glass then. The vibrations of his soporific defence of the indefensible will also attract a multitude of fish and aquatic mammals to the island, attracted by the monotonous vibrations. Good for eating. You could also use his suit as a rough and ready poncho. Perfect.

2. A decent knife for cutting/digging/whatever else.

3. A pair of rabbits that can breed and populate the island so i have a food source.
