I'd hardly call Gareth Evans a buffoon. Certainly he showed poor judgement in the affair with Cheryl Kernot, but his political career has been pretty first rate.
After leaving Australian politics, he was President of the International Crisis Group from 2000 - 2009, he is currently Co-Chair of the International Commission on Nuclear Non-Proliferation and Disarmament, and is Chancellor of the ANU.
In interviews, he is thoughtful and intelligent. Imo he represents a loss to the Australian political scene.

I meant that his affair with Cheryl Kernot made him look like a bit of a clown. But in most other respects, his political career was one of sound achievement. He was certainly one of the better and more capable members of the ALP government at the time.
