I heard about the proposal and just noticed that here in QLD drunk drivers will be locked out of their car under new state legislation to come into force before next Xmas.
Sounds like a good move on the face of it, but will be interesting to see how drunk driver behaviour changes if at all.
Has this been enacted successfully anywhere else?
Under the new legislation, passed this week, high-risk drink drivers will have to install the breath-testing devices in their own cars and prove they are under the limit before they can start up.
They will also have to pay the $2000 cost of having the devices fitted.
The penalty will be imposed on first-time drink-drivers caught with a blood alcohol limit of more than 0.15, and those who have been caught with readings between 0.05 and 0.15 twice in five years.
