beans on toast is a good one - protein, carbohydrate and low in fat. Good for keeping trim and saving pennies.

The other option is skip dipping and then it's free

Pasta , olive oil, cheery tomatoes, touch of garlic, fetta cheese, mixed together in a big pot, serves a lot of people , tastes great , and costs very little, . Have a nice french stick or yummmy tiger loaf on the side and looks a million dollars but with little effort and low cost.

Living without money - Have a read about this guy. He has been living in the US without money since 2000. Interesting read with some philosophical nuggets in there. You might pick up some tips.

The aboriginals also have the right idea. They supplement their whiteman money with bush tucker. So if you live near some water try and catch some fish. Fresh road kill is also good "value".

Tuna casserole. 500g of home brand spiral pasta (60c), tin of home brand tuna ($1.95),home brand grated tasty cheese ($5.70), small tub of black olives ($3.00)

Cook pasta (yeah, you usually do that.) Get big bowl. Put in layers of pasta, cheese, tuna and put in microwave on high for around 5 minutes. Serve with cheese on top, some of the olives. Goes Ok with Vienna bread loaf with olive oil. Well, I like it.

All great suggestions, try growing some vegetables. Fishing is great idea, when I am in cairns i usually go to the barron, and the indeginous people are always there and they always catch a good meal. Try supermarkets at closing time. Here in Uk they have a special area in the fridge for food which is close to use by date.

Finally, visit your parents as much as possible ;-)

Add a small can of vegetable/minestrone soup to a heap of steamed rice...instant cheapo meal for under $2.50 :)

Students are at the higher end of skivers in Australia, just above politicians.

They should be sent out in to the fields with a pot and some rice and made to do the harvest.

They should be allowed to eat seldomly and frugally.

For once I agree with old man Mao.

on a daily basis supermarkets mark down the perishables, due to due dates or use by dates. if you find one where they mark down by half or abouts, you can find some great deals on food that is totally fine to use, as long as its used within a day or 2 or if it can be, frozen.

combined with shopping at the local fruit & veg shop or if possible the city market about closing time and youll eat very well, good quality, fresh meals.

its all about being smart.

And don't forget those camel burgers lol

-Congee ( Chinese Rice Porridge)
Half cup rice, 3L water, simmer until the grains are split and the whole thing porridge like, then just poach some meat such as beef mince or sliced chicken tight fillet(marinated with sugar, salt, soy, oil and little corn starch) in the congee. Works out to be like $1 per serving and if you have a rice cooker, its the easiest thing to cook in the world.

-Pasta (With something like a simple tomato and garlic sauce)
Tin of tomato, 2 cloves of garlic, salt, pepper and sugar. Simmer and reduce for about 20mins.
Cook pasta and toss the pasta in the sauce. Add parmesen cheese. works out to be $1 per serve as well.

or go snare some pesky wabbits and have a real feast

pesky wabbit - i wish - the rich man farmers have ensured the rabbit is off the menu forever. kept plenty alive during the depression. who remembers the fiasco of about 10 years ago when the latest germ to kill off rabbits was released 'accidently' - accidently my ..........

big pot of rice

beef burgers

Yes lentils cheap as and very good for you.

I see no one has put what I think is the obvious. Eat at mums. It's free, the menu changes daily and the food is made with love, and if you are lucky no cleaning up either!
