Kidnappings in Third World countries

That wasn't a documentary...that was a tv show, and i thought those 2 girls in India were
stunningly dumb.

Wrong choice of words, "dramatization" would have been more appropriate.

I thought they were stupid too.

Interesting posts in this thread about people's travels and safety warnings though ;)

aussiest,

You sound, pardon me saying, like the sort of person that things happen to.

Warn your friends of this predisposition.

I could imagine you going to Neverland and breaking your leg rather than having anything salacious happen to you.

As I said the invitation to come to Townsville is open or if you want some real action a sail around Palm Island could be arranged.

gg

they chose only the 5star hotels and stay on the tourist map. the end up missing out on the culture and some of the more obscure/remote natures. why? presumably for safety.

Yeah, and also comfort. People dislike being out of their "comfort" zones, esp. us Westerners. Quite sad really. I know people who can't even live without a dishwasher or air conditioning. I mean, come on!

I agree with you about absorbing the culture. Depending on my trading, i'd stay in 5 star hotels if i could afford it. Lol. No, not really. 3 Star and huts or whatever could be fun. Depending on the location. If it was Thailand, definately a hut on the beach...

My friends have already been warned, they don't listen .

No, really. Thanks for your concern, but i think that after watching the show, i would be less likely to fall for any of those tricks. I'd hope so, anyway.

Failing that, i may have to take you up on your offer to sort a few of those people out should i get myself into any trouble.

i know its hard to guage from a dramatization/re-enactment, but they were so stupid i had to ask myself if it even happened or was it just a story.

Maybe they were late returning to UK(held hostage) and made it up to keep parents happy OR;
They sold the story to a tabloid to help fund their holiday, or even try get re-embursed from credit card company. It just seemed so stupid.

It's not just 3rd world countries where you need your wits about you. A friend of mine was given quite a beating in Barcelona when he refused to give up his wallet & phone in a mugging.

Just like trading, all you can do is manage your downside risk. Keep backup documents, leave the rolex at home and carry minimum cash. Once or twice where I've found myself in really poor countries, I've kept enough cash to get a cab back to the hotel in a sock. Never needed it fortunately.

It's all about being aware of your surroundings... But don't let fear prevent you from living life and experiencing what there is to experience.

Oh no, the only places I want to visit still! :(
The first time I went to Rio (5 years ago) I was mugged twice in a week. The last 2 times I was more cautious, and only spent a few days there each time, so I missed out. It's an amazing city, but there are so many poor people they obviously resort to whatever means to get by. Tourists are an easy target. I recommend go, but just be prepared.

Venezuela is a beautiful country, but I wouldn't advise anyone to go there. Go to Colombia instead.

well said doctorj

We have never had any problems travelling, but we have all heard stories

I didnt watch the show Aussiest, but some friends of mine did, not something that would interest me to watch..

As for Britt Lapthorne, yeah, that was sad, but bad things can happen here in Australia too if you arent careful

peter falconio? ivan milat?

you are absolutely right, all countries have dangers and good/bad people, some countries are prone to natural disasters(floods, mudslides, typhoons) others have political instability(military coups, protests, terrorism).

no country is free of crime, but researching countries before you leave can help minimise risks. dont visit somewhere during typhoon season or during an election if political system is a concern.

its impossible to avoid the wackos like ivan milat, but they exist in every country. no need to fear living.

bloody sydney was bad enough in the late 80's even. i remember some back streets of the cross ud avoid and hotels bondi way unless u had a couple of trusted mates on hand.
and the building sites, full of crims and junkies, run by crims too. i got beat up a tad as an incentive to leave for doing something wrong or just past my use by date. they got a mate to tap me a bit, this old fella who was a real x druggie and slammer time. stuffed if i was going to hit some poor old 40/50yo. i suspect it was a setup to cover some dodgy air conditioning work we did under instructions(shine up the old ac vents for good dosh, guessing to cover up the none replacement of a/c unit).
for smoko fun one day they got this poor eager naive aussie lad to take me on, poor lad.
i hate to think what went on in the real dodgy sites, this was the old emi bld on pitt street right in town. im sure if anything went wrong u'd end up in the foundations rather than cops or hospital.

Read some were if they want your Wallet throw it as hard as you can in the opposite direction you want to go in and then run like hell..
I did bring a Girl home one night who could see Angels above my bed room door now that was scary.

Thx for the heads up.

What if I went through Rio for a few days as part of a guided tour? You think that would make any difference in terms of safety?
