Who really controls the media?

Its interesting that in these times, how much positive spin there is in the main stream media concerning the economy & the bright future we all have.

Its maybe a good thing, generating confidence, but it makes me a little uneasy that the other side of the argument is not aired. I find to get a balanced view these days, I have to scourer the net.

So, to speculate, does the main stream media get directions & guidelines of what to report & if so from who?

I doubt there is much control from the govt, if thats what your insinuating. However, I do believe the govt. tries to cover things up with scandals. Apparently theres been a whole lot of bills that were passed during the recent scandal surrounding the email.... one of them being the alcopops tax, which the media missed whilst frenzying over the supposed 'email' :D
 
Buckeroo only the net is where you can find unbiased views, the rest of the media is just to suck braindead people in.


Ill give you 1 little example:

* in NSW there is a bill that has been put forward from the shooters party to allow conservation hunting in National parks to help with feral animal control (like there is now in State forests with alot of success). Well for some reason some greenies thought it was a bill proposed to kill native animals (which is not listed in the bill at all) but every day hundereds of articles based on that bill clearly states the shooters party are trying to negotiate deals with the labour government so they can get access to shoot native animals in national parks.

So as you can see if you write strong biased statements your gonna get people viewing it (who cares if its true or not).

On the net thow you will always find a balanced view.

.. and why not?

I think its high time there were some changes made... they get away with murder and its wearing thin..

We buy the paper for updates - not rubbish..

If you have a problem with whats being published in the newspapers, dont buy them!!

If you stick with the ABC, especially radio, although they're not infallible, mostly their reports are pretty accurate and unbiased.

It would be naive to expect that the various commercial media do not reflect the views of their owners.
 
A bit off topic but,

Kerry Packer's biography detailed how he and his Father Frank, used to manipulate politicians to get their way by either fully running what the government or the opposition wanted to say in the newspapers or criticising them on the front page. They could win or lose an election for a party with their support or lack of it.

I don't think this is a lesson that has been lost on Rupert Murdoch, when you look at how FOX News is an overtly staunch Republican supporter.

So media control does happen politically, but to manipulate the financial markets? Definitely possible....

Consider the size of holdings of the Packers and the Murdochs, it does not seem that hard to imagine some ramping going on of the aforementioned business interests. It's just reported in the public interest of course........
 
We'll if its God Jono1887, then I should feel right at ease.

Its interesting though, that some people here on ASF believe that the worst is still to come. I also believe this to be so, therefore I'm still very defensive in my investments & preparing for the worse by removing debt.

But because the general media is reporting such a rosy picture and the Government is encouraging the spending message, I do have friends that believe all is well & are increasing their spending & debts (incidentally, I think they may be listening to the ABC Julia).

Try to talk to them about the current risk & they seriously believe the experts can't be wrong & the Government wouldn't lead them don't the garden path.

So, hope to God everything is on the up from now on, because it will be hard to see friends totally destroyed financially because they were sucked in.

My earlier comment re the ABC was based on their news/reporting of current events.
That's quite separate from the various programmes which express the opinions (and biases) of their presenters.

i.e. Phillip Adams' programme is well to the left in everything.
'Counterpoint' with Michael Duffy is more to the right.

A sensible person listening to any ABC programme will do so with the predilections of the presenter in mind and do their own research before making investment decisions.

I took the title of the thread to not particularly be related to financial stuff anyway.

What about Fran and the lass from the Age in the mornings.

Two lefties, in a three legged race.

However Rupert is king of media worldwide, and allows his workers, e.g. Phillip Adams surprising leeway.

The ABC only has Counterpoint as a token right response to the left hash that passes for broadcasting.

The Country Hour, Indigenous Shows, Kerry O'Brien, Lateline, All Comedy , Science Show on ABC all broadcast boring left repetitive arguments which have a large following amongst the small commentariat.

Ummm , not sure on the controlling factor. If the Murdochs are anything to go by then I guess they would have a fair amount of control on what/why/where is to be portrayed in their outlets. Mainly due to their vast holdings in print/tv/film/radio etc.

Packers have gone by the by but an amusing tale was one of a comedy program that was going to do a skit on him. "Not on my PFu*king network" The big fella thundered, and promptly pulled the plug for 20 minutes or so on national TV until the smoke had cleared. Now that is power.

As for today, media has changed. We get it via the internet, telephone networks, viral advertising, on the side of buses. You get my drift. These were not available in previous eras and subsequently it would have been easier to manipulate. Newspapers, radio and TV were pretty much it and only 2 conglomerates owned them in Ozland.

I guess in a way we do. If we like it, we watch it or listen to it and our demographics of "tuning" in are recorded. Not many TV shows keep hanging around once ratings prove they are not attracting an audience. So in summary if we all decide to log out of ASF and never to return will this website keep going? Probabaly not.

Who controls the content of what we watch and how it is formatted is another matter completely. :eek:
 
i trust you guys have seen 'the daily reckoning.com.au' ?
a yank in australia with a contrary view of financial opinion'trends etc,
