I'll go first, here are a few that I've sampled recently and have been really impressed

Henschke - Henry's Seven

just tried it tonight - Shiraz, grenache, mourvedre, viognier blend

awesome quality for 30 bucks!




Chateau Loudenne Cru Bourgeois 2000

bit more expensive this one - mid range french bordeaux - awesome quality - the absolute business - around 60 bucks this one
 
I was about to start a thread on this very topic but did a search before doing so and found this thread.

It's probably about time it was dusted off and resurrected. I'm sure I'm not the only wine fan here.

I don't actually have anything to recommend right now but am due to make a trip to the local bottleshop in the next couple of days to pick up a few bottles and thought someone out there in ASF land may have tried something particularly good recently.

So if you have, go and pull that empty bottle out of the recycling bin and let us know about it!
 
There's a great winery near my mums place - Happs http://www.happs.com.au/
very small place with wonderful, great value wines, very hard to get in the eastern states.

The whole area of Dunsborough - Margaret River - Augusta, has some amazing quality, low
cost wines....IMO the best in Australia.

Most things only make me want to drink.

The past 2 years or so, the Oyster Bay SB has been my regular white of choice with dinner. I always have a few bottles in the house. At about £6-7/bottle here it's hard to get much better bang for buck in the whites. The Cloudy Bay SB is a decent drop too, but a little more expensive.

I also enjoy many of the Vasse Felix wines, but very few varieties are easily available here.

Oyster Bay and Cloudy Bay are pretty much like water in Aus...cheap, refreshing and everywhere. The NZ SB's are always a great drop. I do like Nobilo SB as well.
 
Pizzini wines in the King valley make an excellent Nebbiolo or sangiovese.


Disclosure: I'm married to one of them .
 
I made the mistake of buying an english wine once. Never (ever ever ever) again.

I don't know a great deal about French/Spanish/Italian wines, so I tend to buy the Aussie and NZ wines more often than not. There's nothing worse than getting home after a long day at work to open a wine that's better suited to cleaning drains than drinking.
 
I know its not wine, but I just brought a bottle of the limited release 25year old chivas regal. Xmas present to myself, finally picked it up yesterday :D

I'm still trying to decide between drinking it now or save it!
 
Good wine is getting cheaper at the moment because of the global meltdown and the competition between Dan Murphy and First Choice.

Stoneleigh is another adequate NZ SB. Drank a fair bit of when when we lived in NZ. PLenty here in OZ. Another Marlborough white. Oyster Bay is good too.
 
Most Coonawarra reds are good. Esp like Majella and Redmans. Used to live there so I am biased.

Alkoomi estate used to make an OK drop. Have a coule of bottle I found recently - have yet to try them.

I'm happy cos i can get Red Label here for only 105 RMB per bottle!

Makes life easier after an unannounced AIB audit i tell you what!;)

Well according to the experts of OZ. It's all about the Barossa or Margaret River. But I was never interested nor welcome in the circles of the Left and their Chardonnay parties.

But I love Port! :D

I love port too, but i tell you what...it doesn't like me:banghead:

It kills me to drink only a small glass now....shame, tastes so nice too.

I've been a fan of Penfolds Bin 28 Kalimna Shiraz since the outstanding 1998 vintage. You can usually pick it up on special for around $25. Two years ago when they released the 2004 vintage a number of chains (eg Dan Murphys) had it for $16.

Another decent red I recently tried is Jim Barry "The Lodge Hill Shiraz" vintage 2006 for around $17. It's rated a 91 by Jeremy Oliver in the Aust Wine Annual 2009

With the whites, I prefer the SSB (Semillon Sav Blancs). Most of the Margaret River ones are great and good value (Cape Mentelle,Devil's Lair Fifth Leg, Leeuwin Estate, Evans & Tate). Also some Adelaide Hills ones are similar in being good value.
 
I did a wine tour around Mendoza last year and they really do some great wines, especially Melbec. I haven't seen many Argentinian wines in Australia, but if you see one in the shop, or on a menu, make sure you go for the Melbec. One winery we went to was Zuccardi, and had one of the best winery tours I've had. And I've had a few. I recommend their Santa Julia Reserve Melbec from any year but the 03 and 04 won some awards I think, or their Santa Julia Reserve Tempranillo, if on the menu. Or, go to Argentina and try a tasting!
