Wine reviews/recommendations

Hi all fellow wine connoisseurs.
I'm lucky enough to work in a bar that has a bottleshop.
I get to sample heaps of wines and beers before we decide to stock them.
The best Sauvignon Blanc I ever had is the Nautilus from N.Z.
Just last week I sampled and decided to stock a Sauvignon Blanc called Dusky Sounds also from N.Z. (they are both from the Marlbough area)
We sell the Nautilus for about $25.00. Dusky Sounds sell for $15.00.
In my opinion the Dusky Sounds is the best value for money Sauvignon Blanc I've ever had.
It rates in taste just a fraction under the Nautilus.
I've noticed there is a few Sauvignon Blanc drinkers in this thread.
So if you can get your hands on the Dusky Sounds do yourself a favour and try it.
Interested to hear your review.
Cheers all and salute.

rockfords basket press rules. $49, so a bit pricier than some but its a premium & comparable to grange, etc at the top end. Much cheaper than grange!

Here's an exercise that you "connoisseurs" might try (and it might save you some money).

We tried this with a group of 8 people all of whom drank wine most nights of their lives and had strong opinions on what they liked. We got six bottles of Shiraz ranging in price from about $12 (Ingoldby) to about $50 (Rockford Basket Press). Others from memory were Bendigo Waterwheel ($16), Elderton ($20), Voyager Estate ($30) and a sixth one whose name escapes me. All participants had tasting notes and were able to taste the wines first. Then the wines were decanted and participants had to try to identify each wine without seeing the bottle but still using the tasting notes. No-one identified all six correctly (2 people got all six wrong!!!) but more significantly there was not a high correlation between price and what people were identifying as the best wine.

And before you cast aspersions on the palates of my friends, perhaps you should try this yourself sometime!

Dusky Sounds is OK. I prefer Stoneleigh and Oyster Bay. Similar price. These are Marlborough SOunds SBs. Some fo teh HAwkes Bay SBs are good - don't see them much.

Have tried similar without tasting notes with a group that included winemakers - the winemakers in the group picked them in reasonable order. The rest of us swillers were all over the place. Have lived in or very close to 5 wine regions. So had good access!

Wine is in two groups - everyday guzzling (have access to reasonable cleanskins) and better occaisions (they are under our stairs).

EOD - what you like is what you like.

Sorrry....I forgot to incude "metala" Shiraz Cabernet. Can be quaffed on release or generally cellared for 5-8 years and develope into a really good drop. The White label and the more expensive Black label are both excelent value. Dan Murphy gets into price wars and you can pick up the white label for $10-$12 and the black label from $30-$40 if you keep yours eyes peeled. hic...oops...scuse me.

Have a look at the Margaret River region winery's...there's a fantastic industry over there
that fly's under the eastern states wine radar...most of there production is drunk locally or
exported, so very few of the millions of bottles produced ever make it across the Nullarbor.

There are just no bad Margaret River wines....here is a couple of index's

Woolworths currently have a sale, 20% off for purchases of any six bottles of wine. They also have the current release of McWilliams Mount Pleasant Phillip Shiraz 2007 marked down to $9.99 which drops to $8.00 in any lot of 6 bottles. That is a good price for a wine that is normally priced above $12.00.
