I would appreciate any and all comments from traders using Commsec/Iress as to pluses & minuses. Quality of live feed, access to charts, intrerday charting, ticker tape and any limitations experienced. Is is worthwhile and reliable? Also does it log you out if you're inactive at any stage?

Yeah

I’ve been using it since it was implemented, and I haven’t really got any complaints, it a good, simple to use reliable platform. Intraday charts are nice plus there’s IV charting which is handy for options trading.
There is an auto logout but the system keeps running, it just prompts you for a password when you want to place a trade.

Ye it works good,, meaning reliable,,,, but it doenst have the bells n whistles
that pt1 had :(

I've been trialling it for free. I think it's OK, but IB is more cost effective.

Anyone knows how to unsubscribe from CommSecIRESS? I read the FAQ but I don't get it.

How do I unsubscribe from CommSecIRESS?
There is no option to unsubscribe with CommSecIRESS. Once you have registered, you may choose not to subscribe for an unlimited period. If you do not subscribe to CommSecIRESS you will not be charged, nor will you be able to access the platform.

I assume it means that if you don't logon in the month you won't be charged. I would give them a call though just in case.

I've been pretty happy with PT1 but looks like at the end of Jan will have to switch over to Iress. The stock price in cents vs dollars and cents for PT will be a gotcha to keep an eye out for.

It also seems it doesn't remember lines drawn on charts or transpose them across to the intraday charts if drawn on a daily/weekly chart. (I find it handy to be able to see lines drawn on a daily or weekly charts when following the intraday charts).

At one stage I couldn't find full course of sales data but it looks like its in there now (not sure if this is new or I just couldn't find it before).

The price/volume histogram analysis screen looks useful. It also looks like there is useful additional stuff like the IV charting etc.

So overall it appears to have most of the necessary features, just a matter of getting used to a new UI I suppose.

Has anyone got a URL that can be used to launch comseciress straight from the desktop without having to go through a few screens on the comsec page?

The order window on my Iress (not with Commsec) always shows a total price - makes a good safety check. At one stage I was doing some trades with OX using dollars and cents and some with another broker with Iress so had to be careful.

Yes, this is a nuisance. Again on my version of Iress, you can save or export charts. The lines, etc all hold when you import the chart back into Iress.

The daily charts do not update dynamically in real time - they have to be refreshed - and then that loses the lines. It does become a nuisance to have to keep importing the marked charts.

The other thing I don't like is that Iress intraday charts only contain data for that day. I pay for Boursedata as well as Iress as I like continuous intra day charts and daily charts that hold their markings and update dynamically. I like a lot of the features on Iress for options - although a few more colums for the greeks would be nice.

At one stage I couldn't find full course of sales data but it looks like its in there now (not sure if this is new or I just couldn't find it before).

I really like the Iress course of sales. You can also select a date to get historical info. You can click the headings to sort the columns if required (as you can with most of Iress headings). Have a look at OZL's put exercises over the last few trading days to test it out! Can sometimes be useful for historical info on option codes as well as keeping an eye on daily option exercises.

Not only IV - also PE and I think dividend yield. Don't have my Iress loaded up at the moment. Suggest a good read through the help files as there are many little bells and whistles to found in there. eg it is also possible to copy and paste info from Iress into Excel.

Cheers :)

Hi Cuttlefish,

When you log on to comsec, there's a dropdown box with different "start in" selections, select start in iress when logging on, it will take you straight to the page where the launch iress button is located.

I have never paid for professional trader and I have had it for a couple of years. They never took it away, so I never asked why.

Anyway, I don't think I will meet the new trades per month - is it 8 to get it for free? I don't trade as much as I did about a year ago.

Can anyone tell me how many trades per month? Sorry, I'm a bit lazy.....

I find the above response very helpfull, and I thank everyone for their reponse.
Has anyone tried to set up the hot keys, linking them to buying or selling windows?
Any further feed back on optimising the speed of functions within Iress would also be appreciated.

Have used the WebIRESS trading platform for 8 years or more.

Still have accounts with AOT who were taken over by Comsec

Its the most reliable trading platform ever, I have never experienced a single problem over that period and some years I day traded making zillions of trades never a problem.

Its a shame that its never supplied with its full capability of order types.

I currently use IB more than WebIRESS due to the access to other markets and the order types are better.

Hi Guy's,

Just a comment on commsec iress, one minor problem I have at the moment is the requirement to enter a trading password in another screen after a trade is placed/amended/cancelled ect. ; this was also a requirement on the old Protrader (commsec thing). It’s not normally a problem for me but it caused me to trip up last Friday.

I spoke to tech support about provision to disable this feature if the ability to manage a working order in exceptional circumstances is required but I received the same old response.

cutz - how did it trip you up - did you think you'd completed the placement of an order but hadn't done the password step so it wasn't completed? Or was it something else?

Hi Cuttlefish.

At risk of sounding like a d******* . I’ve been transferring stock out of one of my commsec accounts into another brokerage account, I have been doing this on the market placing the bid from my new account a few levels below and placing the ask through commsec a few levels down, then working up slowly in both accounts till the deal is done for a small spread effectively paying the brokerage, as you can imagine moving the ask up on commsec was pretty awkward. ( i didn't tell commsec tech support that)

I did this successfully over a period of a few weeks on four of my holdings, the 5th lot last Friday I got caught with my pants down buying but not dumping the commsec holdings due to what i feel was the delay in entering details for an adjustment. The market fell away slightly so being the stubborn person I am I waited for the price to recover but it didn’t happen.

As you can see my personality isn’t cut out to be a trader, that why I prefer options.

Wow - you guys really do it the hard way with Commsec Iress! It doesn't sound a bit like the Iress I use or have ever used. I started about 6 years ago with AOT Iress and, after they were taken over by Commsec, have had a couple of other brokers using Iress.

During those 6 years and using different Iress brokers, I have never had to keep entering trading passwords. That would be intolerable. Once logged in, that's it - much like IB.

Yeah,

I had to laugh when I read this on the commsec site, quote “the edge needed in order to take advantage of market opportunities”.

Iress really is a nice platform, and fair enough begineers may need safeguards but surely than can offer the fully worked version to experienced players.

To keep typing, re-typing passwords continually would surely have to make it harder for a beginner and more prone to error.

The fully worked version worked as well for me as a beginner as it does now. My main wish is for combo orders to be available - and it would be nice if Iress could store more than just the current day's intraday charting data - and maybe add greeks into the option monitor. But it would apparently be doubtful just how much of that would flow on to Commsec Iress users.
