Petrol $2.50 in 2009?

We got plenty of horses and farriers at my work, and they would be quicker than most cars off the start! Only problem is that they cost a ridiculous amount of money.... between $1000-$20,000,000! and around $25 a day to agist them.

Shouldn't the government be spending more time on looking at alternatives? More incentives on hybrid cars, and gas?

I think an investment in a company with exposure to new car retailing might be a good investment if the comes a time where the is a wide spead move to alternative vehicles,... think about the number of cars that will have to be replaced as conventional combustion engines become obselete.

All the cost of design and production changes will fall on the manufacturers where as the retailers will just make a margin on the higher sales.

With current fuel prices as high as they’ve ever been, are we going to see petrol reach two dollars a litre any time in the near future? According to David Thurtell, a commodity expert at the Commonwealth Bank, it would take decades for petrol prices to rise to two dollars a litre and by then we would hopefully be relying more on renewable fuel sources such as hydrogen fuel rather than fossil fuels.

“I think two dollars a litre is a very long way away,” says David. “If… terrorists hit the major Saudi refineries, for example, then oil could go to US$70 or US$80 [a barrel] and that would probably put 25 cents a litre onto the cost of petrol. But really we’re getting into speculative territory here.”

The NRMA is doing the only thing it can - denial. They'll be harping on about hydrogen and biofuels right to the bitter end rather than face the reality of an energy crisis.

and;

Does anyone know approx. figures of litres of petrol Australia uses per day? Like to work out how much the govt. get in revenue from excise and GST. per day. I think it will be staggering to see the result!

I've looked out over Sydney's skyline for over forty Years to regularly see the brown Photo chemical haze that it's continually bathed in. It's when you've been away for a week or more where the air's clean and you get back here on a friday afternoon it's then that you realize what that brown haze smells like and what your being pouched in. Bring on $2.50 ... $3.50(that's getting it to about the price of milk) and more people will be forced to use less and tune their vehicles more often. Slowly they'll wake up and start looking for alternatives, They want have to look far. Try this, put 'cng honda civic' into google, you fill it up over night in your garage overnight off your domestic gas main . Randwick council pushes some of its trucks around with with cng now. If your an early adopter it could be years before the tax office works out how to levy fuel excise on you.
This stuff is 'off the shelf', It just not on our shelves in one big box.
For the time being I use LPG and have done from well before there was any sort of installation rebate. I don't see self immolation as an issue. With the money I'm saving just on fuel I can leverage about $25K .

Does she drive a 1800kg 4WD, or a 1700kg Commodore or Falcon? I have a feeling not...

Yet this is what the majority of vehicles on our road are at the moment, when most people really don't need them.

I've told a few people I'll soon be selling my old 12L/100km car (once considered reasonable), and buying a small car that can achieve 6L or so/100km in expectation of $2-3/L fuel in 2009 or 10.. yet I still get abused for thinking of driving a "girls car". What a crock.

Many Australian's deserve everything they get when it comes to higher fuel prices, and they really need to starting pulling their head out of their arses and start thinking about the real reality here in the future. The era of the Aussie tanks (influenced largely by the Yank Tanks) is over..

It's roughly 1000 litres per head of population per year. So about 20 billion litres a year. That's just petrol (all grades). Diesel is a bit over half the quantiy as petrol. All other things (kerosene, LPG, bitumen, lubricants, fuel oil, heating oil etc) are roughly 20% of the total.

Those figures are very rough and from memory. The petrol one should be pretty accurate though. Fuel oil in particular has significant state by state variation in terms of consumption per head.

That's why I simply don't believe anyone who claims Australians want to cut CO2 emissions. Actions speak a lot louder than words and when it comes to action, most will spend a fortune on a big car but won't spend a relatively trivial $2K on a solar water heater. Enough said...

Out of curiosity, can this car tow a trailer for example? And house a growing family of 4? Looks impressive but just wondering about those questions. We have a Falcon and it barely fits us all plus our holiday gear when we go away to the coast for a week in Summer. Its a guzzler but I suppose my car evens out the cost of petrol in our family a little as its a Honda Jazz, yeah a girlie car but Im a girl so its ok!

We have a big car and a small one. We hate 4WDs with a passion and cannot understand why a city (Sydney) needs to be full of them, esp since 99.9% of them have never seen a bush to bash

We recently replaced our gravity fed hot water system (cause it broke down after 60 years) with instantaneous gas hot water. It had a rating of 5 stars and we do get a rebate for it. We did look into solar but as we are going to extend our home fairly soon we didnt want to have to worry about installing it and then having to relocate it so we will install it along with the renovations. I suppose the thing that turns me off solar hot water system is the means test that is in place and unfortunately our family earns more than $150K I wonder what the average Sydney family income is. We have installed insulation in the ceiling but way before a rebate was introduced. I think this gas rebate will be the first ever rebate for us! I was quoted for a solar hot water system in the vicinity of $3k. Quoted from Solarhart website "We can give a ball park figure, a solar water heater can cost between $1500 and $5000 fully installed depending on applicable rebates and incentives, conditions apply."

Todays FuelWatch WA shows that the price of diesel in the Kimberley region ranges from 196.9c to 214.6c

IMO the media and pollies should stop focusing on the price of ULP. Much of the country's economy relies heavily on diesel - not ULP. With diesel at those sort of prices, don't expect the cost of food / services to diminish anytime soon....
