I gotta say... I've never had this many come down on me over opinions on stocks...

And no one on this thread has even indicated what party they support yet another political discussion has become a slinging match...

I being the minority party obviously...

I don't want to but heads guys... Was never my intention!

Brendan Nelson is such a dork...

......and St Kevin is not like some little high school nerd who always thinks he has the answers to everything....

Every time I try and hear him out I find my eyes drifting over the trimmings around the TV screen... So little presence, so little inspiration... So little... Clue...

But I guess the Libs will let him run around for a while because he sets the scene beautifully for when Costello finishes his holiday and returns to save the party! Everybody loves a hero...

That maybe a nightmare for Rudd/Swan/Gillard ( thats if Gillard hasn't cut Rudd's throat for the top job by the next election)... Costello makes them look stupid in question times...

Just like Rudd and Labour - your post was full of contradictions and contained a lot of guff that was of little relevance.

For example....I didn't realise that previous Opposition Leaders wrote all their own material. You think the whole party helped Nelson write his......wow...... who would have thought!!! Doesn't seem fair does it.......when you think that Wayne Swan wrote the whole Budget himself.

I can see that you must be one of the new Labour/Rudd fans......where delivery of the speech was more important to you than the content!!!

The current government has been configured using Big Brother or Survivor as their model... The "What will appeal to the majority" approach...

It’s Media Spin at its finest... But at the same time, the Libs have gone for the age old conservative image with the hope that ideas will propel them.

Sadly, Big Brother rates better then ABCs Late line...

In times like these you need a party with an anchor man (Brains... Probably not necessary) who does the speeches, and some gun political/social analysts who drive policy.

Why is it so hard for them to find this balance/formula...?

I believe Turnbull should have been the Libs main man...

Howard stayed in power for so long because he offered the nation the perception of wealth... He just got a bit maniacal towards the end.

In this capitalist/entrepreneurial country that we are at this point in time... Turnbull is the perfect candidate with business credibility. He would have been what Howard was at his peak. Straight shooter, business man, tough decision maker... Throw in some greenie and lose the IR laws... Libs have a potential winner.

But then I come back to my original comment... I believe Nelson is just keeping the seat warm for when Costello returns.

Perception of wealth !!!... so it had nothing to do with creating & maintaining a strong economy, low unemployment, many Australians wealth increased under John Howard through RE values....

'Perception' is what Rudd used to win the last election.... and with the many young Australians who may have voted for Kevin 07 and soon St Kevin starts to cost them money through their private health premiums going up, they may vote less foolishly at the next election....they may also realize that all St Kevins talk about Koyto was for nothing, that St Kevin loves his show boat 20/20 idea's fest which was more about nothing, that St Kevin smiles a lot, St Kevin can not even get a national ban on plastic shopping bags to happen...

back to the point:

1 - labour are too focused on working class average families yet those families that work hard and thus are means tested are the ones that are loose out ..

2 - get rid of the alcho-pop tax - that is not going to have any impact on binge drinking whats so ever

Q: If it is REALLY SO IMPORTANT, and such a popularist issue, why didn't the Howard Government reduce the fuel excise by 5c litre in the 11 years they were in power - more so, in the runup to the election?? Do Brendan and his buddies think we Hoi Poloi have already forgotten that fact?

IMO, minute fiddling with the fuel excise won't reduce the cost of petrol by much more than "watching it" will.... so it is a bit sad that Horatio's best speech component was a throwaway punchline. Not a lot of substance there. Maybe he will crack 10% popularity in the next poll....

I posted Crikey's mockery last night because - like most of Crikey's stuff - I thought it was quite funny. Didn't really expect too many comments.

I'm with Duckman after last night's effort (and anyone else who echoed his view.)

The first few sentences were what we'd heard too much of from Dr Nelson recently - too esoteric and almost emotional - but then he seemed to gather momentum (and sense) and ultimately I thought it was a good speech, and delivered strongly. Much better than I'd anticipated.

He's capable of being really quite impressive. But probably needs to stick to more prosaic language instead of getting bogged down in the picturesque and emotive stuff, which, of course, was the basis of Crikey's mockery.

I wouldn't be giving up on him after last night's effort, and thought he outperformed any interviews I've seen recently with Malcolm Turnbull.
Yes, Mr Turnbull is a very successful businessman, but I still think he lacks some political savvy. And experience for that matter.

You are probably correct - But the reality is that the 95% of the 13.6-million registered voters don't review a candidates CV, they "sms" their eviction vote based on what they see and feel from day-to-day TV.

Big call - But I don't imagine that Turnbulls popularity would ever have suffered like Nelsons has... But this cant be quantified obviously, its just speculation.

Just my view on it anyway.

Not being a Nelson fan, I was quite impressed with the parts that I heard, given that Rudd's budget was quite bland and didnt provide much of a target to be shot down. But I think he really did score some points.

The tax on the alco-pops is plain stupid. My son, who at 18 is in the target group, has simply reverted to buying straight vodka and then buys the coke separately. Which means kids are now at far greater risk of having their drinks spiked than if they each had their own bottle that they individually opened. This tax is just a means of raising revenue and is not about binge drinking at all. In fact, it has simply tried to make money out of it!
