Credit card details stolen

Hi Peoples,

Has anyone else had any experience with their credit card details being stolen online?

I got my statement last month and it had a strange transaction for $830 on it, so we rang the bank but unfortunately (or thankfully actually) they had my date of birth down wrong and wouldn't give me any information over the phone. So we traipsed down to the bank, the last working day before Christmas mind you, and a lovely, lovely lady there pulled the details up on her computer screen and it turned out there were 6 other transactions that weren't mine .. including plane tickets with Barcelona Air! Some of the details of the others weren't available, but I just found out that one was with Air Italy as well... (no wonder the fraud squad wanted to know if I was back from overseas yet).

Has anyone else had experience with this? Does it usually work out well?

yes, I once had $1400 go missing in one transaction I got it back as it was obviously not mine. But the thing that makes it worse was that the transaction was made at some sort of car parts supply place in the US..... and as you may have noticed below in my sig, I run an online store selling car parts etc. needless to say I was worried that they would say that I had made the transaction but they didn't end up asking anything about that, somehow they must have been able to tell that it was not my transaction
That was with the CBA by the way.

Also, what makes you think your credit card details were stolen online?

Banks will refund u any transactions thats fraudulent, as long as u can prove that's not your purchase. If you weren't overseas at the time, this could easily be proven, e.g. passport stamps etc. u should be ok, might take couple of months for the money to be returned though.

you shouldnt have a problem,

all credit card merchants (the shop lets say) sign a contract that states money will be taken directly from their account if fraudulent transactions occur, basically if you cannot provide signature

that is the risk you take as a business, so the business will cop the theft or chase it from theif,

a certain protocol is required by the shop/online shop when conducting over the phone or internet, and that is basically collecting a certain level of information,

Hi Upka,

It shouldn't be too hard to prove that I am not overseas *grin*. I'm on a disability pension because I am agoraphobic and rarely leave the house! The transaction for Air Italy wasn't authorised when we were talking to the fraud squad people, so considering I was at the bank on that day it shouldn't be too hard to prove that I wasn't in Italy at the time

Well I would be looking to those places!!! Its too easy for someone to take your details, be it online or at a physical shop front, and use them online to buy stuff!
The advantage you obviously have is that you have only used it online so you can narrow down who you have given your info to.
That's the problem with credit cards now, you very much rely on the honesty of the people your handing the card and/or details over to. As I said before, I run an online store and literaly have access to hundreds of card numbers and their information.
Customers put a great deal of trust into a business when they use credit cards at their stores and it angers me that one dodgy person can ruin a customers trust and the reputation of the business too... It can also make the place that the card was used at look bad as well.

Anyway I hope things get sorted out. It only took a couple of weeks (if that) for mine to get sorted from memory.

There's only 4 places it could have been stolen, so hopefully the police will be able to track down the culprits.

You're absolutely right about how easy it is for someone to steal your details and use it online. I'm suprised the credit card companies haven't got things in place to make it harder, like SMS authorisation when you use your card or something.

Just go to the issuing bank and ask to dispute the transactions you've highlighted. Each has a process by which transactions are investigated and refunded. With the CBA, the process can take up to 6 weeks so it is important you commence proceedings immediately. Also be sure to insist on the bank refunding any interest charged, both to date and while the investigation is ongoing. The unused balance on your credit card is the bank's responsibility and not yours. If the money is taken fraudulently, especially through no fault of your own, you are not personally liable.

Also insist they place an immediate stop on the card and ask to be issued with a replacement. This should stop any subsequent transactions.

Thanks. I'm with the National Australia Bank and the lady we spoke to there was very, very helpful and put the disputes on immediately for me as well as cancelling the card etc.

People complain about the banks all the time, but this lady has really gone out of her way to help me, including communicating with me via email because it's easier for me with my illness to communicate that way.

Strange that the bank didn't contact you upon realising that the transactions didn't follow a pattern. When my husband bought something on line from the USA within 20 minutes the bank was on the phone asking if the trasaction was genuine.

Yep went to a restaurant once, They slugged me for two transaction, the second was for fifty dollars and had a fradulent signature on it, Needless to say I got my money refunded asp, and i daresay the manager of that restaurant recieved a call from the boys in blue.

Too right!
It would also make it alot easier for online business like mine to determine if an order is dodgy or not.... sure we have certain checks in place but at the end of the day it still can be done no matter what lengths we go to.

Think yourself lucky you don't live here in Indonesia. If you use your foreign credit card here, you can guarantee the details will be taken and used fraudulently.

Case in point.

I arrived in Indonesia a while back and while waiting for my local indonesian bank to issue a credit card, I used my overseas card. Only used it a few times in reputable looking establishments, when absolutely necessary.

One day I tried to pay for something on the card and it was rejected. But that's not uncommon here either - bad communications between vendor and bank etc usually being the reason.

I get home and login to internet banking to check the card balance. There's over 20,000 dollars of stereo equipment etc charged to my card in Sydney! I ring the bank and say - someone is using my card and there's a lot of fraudulent entries on it. The bank says "yes we know - we have been watching your card"! I travel a lot so the card has a higher limit than most!

The bank had put a stop on the card, and then following my call cancelled the card. They couriered me a new card straight away. And wiped all the fraud entries. I was pretty stoked at their attitude. Good ole BNZ! I think the time between getting my cc details and its use in Sydney was two days - so the crims are organised and quick.

Indonesia has the highest risk of all countries for credit card fraud. Moral - never let the card out of your sight! Better still - don't even consider using a foreign card in Indonesia. I have no worries using it online, as I have never had a problem.

Oddly enough, the local cards are safe - nobody interested in taking their details..!

It makes me wonder just how common credit card fraud is. I had my card number skimmed twice last year – once in Singapore and once in Thailand. In Thailand I only used my card for the credit card imprint at check in and in Singapore used it again for the check in and once in a large, reputable department store.

Each time the bank picked it up within a day or two and informed me. Great service, but very inconvenient.

it's an unnerving experience for you. Will you be told who the dodgy business is when the investigators find out? Would be good to publicise it, at least on this forum.

You won't believe similarity but I actually was overseas in Sept/Oct and had credit card details stolen nearing end of hol- not card and no signature but with transactions all too similar to yours re air fares to Italy Spain rather obscure and virgin phone and air totalling some $ 4K in 12 hours.

Fraud squad actually cancelled card next day while in London and then refunded next month and provided cash for interim. But they said it most likely occurred via online transaction details not with shop - however not sure on this one.

ANZ and few others monitor your spending habits 24/7 and I also gave them exact itinerary for month o/s. Only problem was cost me 1K in phone calls to Australia to sort out when should have been reverse charges free toll but hotel said they had some old telephone system that didn't work with ANZ's free toll no and then covered and tried to say it was only free toll if applicable to UK toll nos - go figure. This cost was also refunded by ANZ with Stat Dec and hotel bill.

You will get monies refunded but yours and mine sound a bit coincidental given airline names unless these particular airlines just don't bother checking id's match passports so are easy targets for fraud.

Without going on never use Travelex at Mascot Syd unless your monies deposited in card are in there and work prior to flying out. I spent 3 days from Scotland arguing with Mascot travelex and cost me lots of time and energy and tours like 5 hours per day on phone to get fixed with considerable problems they changed story every 30 minutes and persons to talk with and then said couldn't find my receipt despite my bank being debited and then said maybe they had given me 1000 sterling in cash instead despite having given me a passbook card and security code to access pounds.
