Have developed an interest in 'Motivation' recently.

Now - we all learnt about Maslows hierarchy of needs etc. at uni, but what has interested me more is the difference between self motivated folks and unmotivated folks in terms of achievement of their personal goals, dreams etc. There's no doubt in my mind that a little motivation - wherever it comes from - goes a hell of a long way. AND equally, a lack of motivation is a great problem in our society. (including myself at times!)

I have seen some good motivational sayings posted on wall and in e-mails lately - so I wondered if ASFers might like to post their favourite Motivational phrases or sayings.
Or just discuss motivation in general. (without posting the whole wikipedia entry on maslow !!!).

Here's a phrase to kick off - saw it in a cafe today...

He who works with his hands - is a labourer.
He who works with hands and mind - is a craftsman.
He who works with hands, mind AND heart - is an artisan.

:)
Anyone care to add or comment.

Perhaps we should ask Master James Hird what he said to the Port Adelaide troop as it sure proved motivating.

Either he was paid by Geelong FC or he ain't much good as a potential coach - I suspect it is the latter

LOLOL

When I was first going to the gym, a few years back, I had a mate take me for the first few months. He kept it simple...

"Don't think, just do it!"

Keep your mind clear of thoughts, focus on the task at hand. This is the MSG I got.

Worked great for me, not thinking about how tired I was, how daunting weight can look.

Thanks guys - I think I've heard a few people pronounce 'Nike!!'

- meaning - ' just do it'.

The other one on the wall in the cafe was

Life is a gamble...
Each of us is given two ends.
One to think with, the other to sit on.
Heads you win; Tails you lose.

Title of a book which changed my thinking many years ago, by Susan Jeffers;
"Feel the Fear and Do It Anyway".

She explains that we are all fearful of doing anything new and the way to conquer that fear is to just get on and do whatever it is. It rarely turns out to be as difficult we have imagined.

A bloke I know swears by "fake it till you make it" but I'm not at all sure about this because he is unnervingly, determinedly positive regardless of the situation which to me is sometimes completely unrealistic.
Ditto "It's all Good" which I've heard people mutter as they fall about in a heap.

Interesting question and I'd like to hear more on this from others.
It seems to me there is a fairly fine line between being positive and being unrealistic.

I agree Julia - and the hard part is picking where 'positive thinking' crosses the line into 'fantasy'.

But for those of us who tend to over analyse - imagining all sorts of possible outcomes from a particular action - 'just do it' is useful I think.
Certainly it can be useful for share trading. Many times I have missed good opportunities because I've spent too much time thinking...

"fake it till you make it" strikes me as the mantra of certain government employees who rise through the ranks quickly and find they actually don't understand what their job is...

"its all good" - I like the sometimes sarcastic element to it....
now maybe I'm revealing too much of my character in these remarks - and why I need motivating!!!!!!!!!!!

Thats a good one 2020 - here's the full text just to save everyone opening another window...

It Couldn’t Be Done

By Edgar Albert Guest

Somebody said that it couldn’t be done
But he with a chuckle replied
That “maybe it couldn’t,” but he would be one
Who wouldn’t say so till he tried.
So he buckled right in with the trace of a grin
On his face. If he worried he hid it.
He started to sing as he tackled the thing
That couldn’t be done, and he did it!

Somebody scoffed: “Oh, you’ll never do that;
At least no one ever has done it;”
But he took off his coat and he took off his hat
And the first thing we knew he’d begun it.
With a lift of his chin and a bit of a grin,
           Without any doubting or quiddit,
He started to sing as he tackled the thing
That couldn’t be done, and he did it.

There are thousands to tell you it cannot be done,
There are thousands to prophesy failure,
There are thousands to point out to you one by one,
The dangers that wait to assail you.
But just buckle in with a bit of a grin,
           Just take off your coat and go to it;
Just start in to sing as you tackle the thing
That “cannot be done,” and you’ll do it.

On Zen type phrases - a mate of mine seems to think he is Yoda - from star wars. He postscripts all his emails with- "'Try' there is not - only there is 'do'".

(or something like that)

This is a repeat of a previous post.
But Walter Dickman is one great motivator.

I’m reminded of a talk by of a positive thinker I heard once, and my guess is that a few of you may have heard him - Walter Dickman. Must've been 20 years ago - but I still remember what he said.
He said heaps, all about positive thinking etc.
Two things I remember are :-

“If you see a small branch or a rock in the road that is causing traffic difficulties, and it’s relatively easy for you to stop and fix it, do you do so Y/N - he says yes.
But the interesting thing is WHY you should do it. He says, Not for the other drivers, Not for points in Heaven whatever, but Simply for your own self image He effectively turns it into a selfish act, that you jealously guard you own image of yourself as sacrosanct. I found that intersesting lol. Maybe you had to be there.

The second thing I remember was an endless loop he proposed - we all have massive “reserves” of latent abilities which generally go to the grave with us unused - his proposal then , Release your Latent Abilities (RLA), Get “Job Well Done” feedback, Release more LA, etc loops etc. Here's his website (you have to disclose an email address to enter, but I believe I can vouch for his integrity http://www.positivepath.net/walterdickman.asp

Here's one for the romantics out there ... ;)
just think of yourself as an onion lol... http://www.positivepath.net/ideasCJ9.asp
Emotional Layers - The Onion Principle
By Chris Joscelyne
Some people are like a raw egg. They have a hard outer exterior, but once their shell is cracked or broken by a stranger, a workmate, a friend, a family member, or by a romantic partner, they start to fall apart.

Some people are like a jelly. They are soft, squishy and easily devoured. They have no emotional barriers and they are easily manipulated and used by others.

Some people are like an onion. Onions thrive emotionally because they have emotional layers and they know who can be allowed access to each layer … when, and under what circumstances.

Onions understand their layers and how much of their emotional selves they can reveal and share with others, without the risk of deep emotional hurt. This protects them, while allowing them to reveal and share their emotional layers in safety as they choose.

The Onion Principle

Layer 1 is the outer layer with smooth protective skin. Outside this layer is the world at large including the people we meet, do business with, work with, and with whom we have social contact.

Layer 2 is the first inner layer. This is for friends, pals and others we know and like.

Layer 3 is the next inner layer. This is for close family members, and close friends we know and trust.

Layer 4 is for romantic, trusting friendship (boyfriend/girlfriend)

Layer 5 is for embarking on a loving long-term relationship

Layer 6 is for the children if the onion is a parent

Layer 7 is for a total partnership of love and commitment

Layer 8 is the innermost layer (the place where your "inner child" lives). It is your most personal, private inner emotional space.

It is important to understand that an onion does not practice universal mistrust of others. That’s unhealthy. An onion is simply a discerning person who knows that emotional layers are precious, and should only be revealed and shared when empathy, trust and understanding have reached a point where it’s safe to go to the next layer with another person. etc

Change your thoughts and you change your world.

Chinese Proverb
"If you are patient in one moment of anger, you will escape a hundred days of sorrow."

Chinese Proverb
"If you want happiness for an hour -- take a nap. If you want happiness for a day -- go fishing. If you want happiness for a month -- get married. If you want happiness for a year -- inherit a fortune. If you want happiness for a lifetime -- help someone else."

Like the bit about marriage!!!!!!
