Should the 'Reputation' System be turned on?

I guess the best way to describe the 'Reputation' System is it's way of being measured by our peers on ASF based on our contributions to the Forum.

I propose we have a trial.

I put a vote in for yes. Can't hurt to give it a try.
Having said that, how will I react if nobody likes me enough to give me the thumbs up?? It could be a devastating blow to my fragile ego:(
:D

I reckon the length of membership and the no. of posts one has made should already be a reliable indicator. Any rubbish usually gets dissed by the rest rightaway, and if he/she posts a lot of rubbish we'd know to disregard their words.

difficult call I reckon - bound to be a subjective.
average result of tipping comp is also relevant maybe? ;)
but even that doesnt take account of work put in to explaining systems and coring results, commodity market trends and help given to others etc - in the end its hard to compare individual contributions on the trading threads (imo) -
nor the style of trading / investing etc etc (where some people would not hold for a day let alone a month ) :2twocents

I don`t see the need to gang up or label someone because of others opinion of them.

Remember the old saying about opinions!

So what do you think of me now: :silly:

I will let this poll run for a couple of days and if the majority would like to see the reputation system tuned on, we will give it a trial.

So please, if you have an opinion one way or another on this issue, vote in the poll and/or express your views in the thread.

Well it can't hurt... A friend of mine put a photo of me at a rating website (I had low self esteem after getting dumped badly at the time) and then to my surprise I was rated a 9.9 out of 10... That was a nice surprise :D A good ego fix there

It sounds like a stupid idea to me.

Traders mostly think the investors are wrong and vice versa.

I should not be a popularity contest.. (mainly cause I'm an investor and outnumbered 4 to 1 ;) )

Then we should band together and take them all on... :D have you seen the movie 300... they took on the world

1. I agree
2. yep lol - and young traders dont see things the same as people with SMSF super funds
3. hell, you've got problems? lol. try being outnumbered 400 to 1 in the poet's corner here.

PS and btw, I've posted my thoughts on this on poetry thread ;)

Yeah, but the entire point of that site is that you DON'T vote for yourself. Lol!

I'm not sure it's a good idea in terms of the overall ethos of ASF.
With a few exceptions, this is a supportive community with a minimum of personal ego trips. Those that do occur are usually obvious and, although probably not commented on too much, dismissed by most of us for what they are.

My concern would be that any sort of "popularity contest" could lead to hard feelings.

Also, as Realist points out, investors usually have much less to say than traders so necessarily command a smaller audience. Using the stock tipping competition as a criterion also leaves out those people who are long term investors and would not be interested in monthly movement of a stock.

I don't mind one way or the other, but think there could be disadvantages.

Maybe it would help if you chose some less emotive term like "expertise" system. Not a very attractive proposition to invite the inference that your "reputation" is low by the absence of a high "reputation" rating - suggests there is something untrustworthy about you and your posts.

How few will bother to vote even ?

How few will bother to grade a reputation ?

Yet How many will read those reputations and be influenced by them ?

Will reputations be moderated ? Will they be open to challenge ?

I think they are a can of worms
Posts will be judged in any case
posters on the whole should be congratulated fullstop.

There are many free riders on forums
The non contributors should have their reputations on the line..
Why should the few who post
have their reputations judged and on display any more than comes from posting in the first place..

Anyone who makes an attempt at a post that contributes
automatically should have a good reputation..

Anyone who is a destructive poster
should be an obvious case ( hopefully a very rare exception )
and hardly need a reputation to reveal that

Three cheers for all posters on forums everywhere
And boo for those who take and never give anything back
That is where negative reputations should be found..

Some good posts might never be graded
too hit and miss
too many different ways and styles

I say not needed

Cripes that's a good summary motorway ;), well said.
Personally I suspect that the yes votes are mainly newbies who haven't taken the time and effort to read a few posts to get a handle on who makes sense (like so many of you out there) and who doesn't (like me):)

PS Why would anybody want to risk a damaged "reputation"?
(when already anti-ramping rules will guarantee salvation  )
why would anybody anytime expose themselves to strife?
hell, we'd only speak when spoken to ( especially by your wife);)

PS (In my defense lol) the reason I don't post much on the trading threads (although I read em) is that I take Joe seriously when he says you should only post if you know what you're talking about :2twocents

Sums it up nicely - I can't see it adding to the knowledge base.
We should be encouraging those who feel too intimidated to post their views - the less impediments the better.

Well put uncle. I hadnt really thought of it like that although when I first started posting I remember being very nervous and found it hard to ask questions for fear of typing something dumb.......now im over my dumbness:D.
I voted yes because I wouldnt mind to see a trial, but in reality would it result in bigger egos and scaring off the new guys. I think asf is credible and unless everyones is going to hand in an application form with their licence its about as good as it gets. It is an open forum and its great because there are always new posts coming on (unlike some other forums) but im just a bit apprehensive if you mess with the dynamics of it, you might restrict the supply of posts rather than improve the credibility.

speaking of credibility, lol , just receivde some spam ..
" Buy Here's your chance, the next soda giant XYZ " ;)
"Get in Tuesday don't Miss it again
People are already loading up, you should too!!"

the clincher is :-
"Short or long, this one cant go wrong", lol
well at least it rhymes ;).

Hell you dont have to be a genius to smell a rat lol.
I've marked that email with a "probably raving bull" lol
