A western New South Wales man charged with murdering a young woman was on bail for several violent charges against the same victim.

NSW man Daniel Billings has faced court charged with murdering childcare worker Molly Ticehurst, 28. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese says the government will look at "every measure" to stop the "horrifying" rates of violence against women.

On the news tonight Every 9 days a woman suffers at the hands of a demonic oxygen thief.
And it appears that the perpetrators of these crimes appear to be out on bail with an Restraining Order, but they aren't worth the paper they are written on.
Surely the time has well and truly passed, and a proper custodial sentence is passed on to these low life's and the sentence carried out to its full term.

1 in 6 women and 1 in 18 men had experienced physical and/or sexual violence by a current or previous cohabiting partner since the age of 15.

1 in 4 women and 1 in 7 men had experienced emotional abuse by a current or previous cohabiting partner since the age of 15.

1 in 6 women and 1 in 13 men had experienced economic abuse by a current or previous cohabiting partner since the age of 15.

1 in 5 women and 1 in 16 men had experienced sexual violence since the age of 15.

On average, one woman every nine days and one man every month is killed by a current or former partner.

Point here being it's far more than just one case and it's a widespread problem in society. Any solution is going to require broad cultural change not just from the courts, although them too obviously, but from society more broadly.

There's also a whole lot more than that. Violence outside the home be it involving strangers, social situations (eg sports clubs) or the workplace is also a very real thing. Add that to the domestic violence statistics and it'd be even worse. :2twocents

Point here being it's far more than just one case and it's a widespread problem in society. Any solution is going to require broad cultural change not just from the courts, although them too obviously, but from society more broadly.

There's also a whole lot more than that. Violence outside the home be it involving strangers, social situations (eg sports clubs) or the workplace is also a very real thing. Add that to the domestic violence statistics and it'd be even worse. :2twocents

It is really a sad state of affairs these days. Looking over one's shoulder when in the shopping centre car parks is just another.
 
Just came from a client a few minutes ago and found out about a lady I know who has been enduring just such a situation. Hearing it all secondhand, but it seems the courts have completely failed her too.

90% of my clients are women and over the years I have had first hand knowledge of so many such cases, some going on right at this very moment... DV, or threats thereof involved.

Dreadful stuff :(

In reference to another thread and capsicum spray, one of the ladies has felt compelled to carry this form of defence in fear of violence against herself. Legal in WA and I am 100% in support of that.

It is the way we are going.
If he does it a couple more times, he will probably be put away for a while.
He had enough sense, to threaten her with harm to her family, rather than threaten her directly.

Maybe the Government could give that young girl a couple of million dollars, because her life will be a mess, or maybe Lisa Wlikinson can actually take it up?
We are a weired society.

Well it's becoming a quandry, domestic violence and rape is a serious issue, not adjudicating it on its merits is fraught with problems IMO.

The person was obviously intelligent enough to threaten the child with harm to her family, to keep her quiet.
So he wasn't completely stupid.

Exactly, so how do you quantify what someone gets for harm and suffering, is it social standing, age, who perpetrated the crime.
If it is worth $2m for the Brittany Higgins case, it should be worth that for all cases, then the Government might take it seriously.
Because obviously it isn't ATM in my opinion.
The crime seems to run a distant second to the petpetrators IMO, if the reporting of this case is accurate, the victim and her suffering hardly rated a mention.

Under the NSW Victims Support Scheme, primary victims of violent crimes are entitled to1:
  • 22 hours of free counselling, with the option for more where required;
  • Financial assistance to meet immediate needs of victims, up to $5,000 to assist with any urgent expenses.
The current compensation provisions under the Victims Support and Rehabilitation Act 1996 require an 'act of violence' to occur during the commission of the offence, and specify 3 categories of eligible victims: primary victims, secondary victims, and family victims. Applications must generally be lodged within two years of the offence2.

In 2022, there was a $650,000 settlement between the Commonwealth and Rachelle Miller, a former Liberal staffer. She alleged abuse by her former boss, then-government minister Alan Tudge. Here are the key points from the settlement:

  1. The Commonwealth paid Ms. Miller:
    • $300,000 for hurt, distress, humiliation, dislocation of life, loss of professional standing, and personal dignity.
    • $28,000 as reimbursement for past medical and similar expenses.
    • $62,000 for future medical expenses.
    • $110,000 in respect of loss of past and future earning capacity.
    • $150,000 for Ms. Miller’s legal costs.
  2. The settlement involved both Alan Tudge and Senator Michaelia Cash, but it was not an admission of liability or fault by the Commonwealth.
  3. Ms. Miller has urged federal politicians to implement the full recommendations of an inquiry into workplace standards in the parliament, emphasizing the importance of transparency in complaint resolution1.

The general public has just become an audience, as the elites perform in their entitled bubble, is there any wonder the Western society is going down the toilet.
In politics it must be like the floor of the stockmarket, where everyone is shouting, " I need $30m over here , eh don't forget about the $200m in this dept and don't forget about the subs ffs, what about that solar subsidy we talked about last Thursday arvo? By the way it's your shout". Lol

Trouble is, the response to all this has gone straight down the track of the culture wars.

Pretty much everything being said is about female victims in heterosexual relationships, completely ignoring female victims in same sex relationships and completely ignoring male victims outright. Then there's those who don't identify as either male or female.

It's similar to public discussion of poverty, there's an inability it seems to come to grips with the idea of fixing the problem outright. Instead it has to be that oh no, we'll fix it for some people only and not for others.

As with any cancer, either you kill it outright or it'll get you eventually. Hence the inevitable failure of an approach which says something is OK as long as these certain people aren't the victims. Nope, it's not OK no matter who the victim is.

If there's to be a solution for this then it needs a cultural change in society and the first step to achieving that is to unite not to divide. If you're a victim you need assistance. If you're a perpetrator you need locking up. Race, gender, age etc have no relevance there. :2twocents
