To paraphrase the above, an opinion without fact is only an opinion. So why get upset? I don't. A few issues in life sorts out the trivial from the important - like burying your child. So having said that I suggest some of us in the world take a deep breath and relax.

But there are definitely some strong opinions (did I mention that word!! LOL) on here.

Collaborate - to work jointly with others or together especially in an intellectual endeavor

Redback certainly never posted anything on this forum to help anyone and there was never anything terribly intellectual about his posts
 

Why do people think robust debate is getting upset? You yet to see what upset means.

Do you suggest we relax and refuse to participate in major social issues in order to "relax"? That's how "they" take over and change our lives.

This issue is important as it will be part of what shapes the world we live in from now on.

"Burying a child" is agonizing, my folks had to do so, my brother, yep it ****ed me up for ages. A friend of mine had to do the same just recently, but life goes on and I'm damned if I'm going to let the Paulsons of the world screw it for the those of us left, if I can help it.
 
Good to hear you say that. I feel the very same way, especially towards hedge funds and traders that target legitimate companies with the main interest being to force down the SP so they can profit at the expense of genuine investors. At the same time they are happy to be part of the nonproductive society and live off the productivity of those they target.

Life does go on. Robust debate isn't getting upset. But some of the exchanges can hardly be considered robust debate. I because of the debate and opinions that I like ASF. There will always be differing opinions for we know that not everything is black and white.

As for this issue, my original quote of you is one of agreement. As for stirring, everything needs stirring every now and then. Keep going wayneL.

Never wrong? You will be the first one to never be wrong if you can manage it. I'm often wrong and will change if you can prove me wrong. So far you haven't gone there. Resorting to name calling means your argument sucks.

I remember writing a drunk message to UF for example some time ago about how wrong I was in some vigorous debate some time beforehand.

It's certainly not the only time I've admitted to being wrong. You certainly can't survive with women if you take that attitude, after all, they are always right. Isn't that correct Julia? Or are you going to say that's wrong. :

I don't disagree with what you say here, but in part it definitely makes you a socialist.

To me, the financial industry as a whole is generally a non-productive part of society.

But it isn't the problem in itself, it is just the symptom of the complete misallocation of wealth in the western world. It doesn't work for the most important aspects of society, it just works for maximum possible numerical wealth gain. And when it's like that (in a societal outlook in priority, i.e. individual over the whole), there needs to be intervention to re-direct that. Reducing capital gains on all but stocks and individual property would be my initial quick thought.

But personally, I like gaining the trading wealth over a lot of others, because I know that it is being distributed in a much better way than it otherwise would. I was buying a fair amount of art from struggling artists when trading a lot, and Prawn knows where I put a lot of my trading profits last year, which I deem to be a more productive and positive use than doing what most others would.

But coming back to it, profiting from the productive masses in society, whilst largely contributing nothing back, is really the basis of socialism.

To suggest to someone, who joined the services as a volunteer and served a lot of their time as a youth during the Korean war, is a communist is probably the most insulting remark you have made so far. Jest?

If you think the financial industry is a non productive part of society you need to go to a business school and put arts on the back burner. As I said before, the three Ms, Men, Machinery, Money. They must be in sync for a business to succeed.

Your outward opinions certainly do share common themes with socialist undercurrents. Like it or not, that is the way it is.

And why would I need to go to business school? I run my own business. Have interests in another. And I have to study certain aspects of it in my studies anyway.

I never said the whole financial industry is non-productive. Tell me where I said that? But a lot of it seems to be purely about making money off the necessities of the market, rather than the essentials themselves. You and I both seem to be in agreeance there. I said "generally" non-productive. Certainly, what it has evolved into is a long way from what is essential, and a lot seems to be quite superfluous. It really would be interesting to see what the secondary financial industry is worth compared to the primary.

The willingness to apologise and say "I was wrong" is an indicator of maturity.

I have a feeling that you have given me a loaded question. However.

Yes.

A company needs capital ( money) to start and to grow. The first investors in a new company put up the money. To keep that money in the company when an individual needs their investment back he/she sells those shares to someone else who is prepared to put their money in the company.

If the company is profitable, the money can be distributed, some to the shareholders as dividend and some to be spent by the company to grow the company. The money kept within the company then adds value to the shares.

An investors market should be based on these fundamental values. The investor provides the Money part of the 3 Ms.

So yes it is reasonable for the money to be a working partner.
