Did you give it any thought, or did you dismiss it immediately? We're social creatures, and knowledge is power. By choosing to share it with someone else, it can be argued we're asserting dominance, affecting our social standing. While this could be true for both men and women, historically this is often all that women had.

And I simply detest any such generalisations, i.e. that all women can or cannot keep secrets. I expect the variability of such a trait is as great amongst women as it would be amongst men.

It has nothing to do with operating on a shallow level, but how we function as a part of society. Much of it will be subconscious, as I believe this would be. We're social animals and we do tend to seek social structure.
You may detest sexist generalisations, but I made none. I even stated if true it probably occured amongest both sexes. Is it possible that this thread annoyed you and you took it out on my comment, which you assumed was a sexist statement?

I don't disbelieve it.. nor the long standing social traditions going back to tribal times. Women were traditionally the knowledge emparters, the story-tellers, the nurturers around the camp. And the most senior in the tribe were the most revered, because they had the most knowledge, and experience, and feel for what was going on in the tribe around them. So I don't see how things have changed, women love a good gossip, most willl it admit it themselves, and they have no shame in it. Keeping secrets is all part of that, knowing something they think is important, and probably emparting that to others all goes back to ancient history, much of which we still don't even realise is hard-wired into our brains.

I wasn't particularly referring to your comment when I said how much I disliked generalisations, but rather to the thread title which, yes, does annoy me.
My comment was made on the basis of my own experience. I have been told many things in confidence over many years and have always respected that confidence. My friends would behave in the same way.
Therefore my dislike of the thread title and all its implications.

Can you keep a secret? Well so can I !! As soon as you tell someone it is no longer a "secret", irrespective of the gender. Secrets are exactly that .... not to be shared with anyone. If the "secret" is shared then it becomes public knowledge.
