Where to find historical share price data?

Hi guys

I'm looking for some historical share price data, ideally for highly volatile Australian shares. Anyone got any tips as to where to look?

Go to Yahoo, then "Finance"

Enter the ASX code followed by .ax (eg - bhp.ax)

Then select "Historical Prices" (left side of page).

Then select period and time span (day, week, month).

If anyone has used float.com.au, you will see there are some holes in it.

Occasionally they have a 0$ price in 1 field of OHLC (eg DJS), and it isn't corrected for splits, divs.

I am thinking there are 2 solutions two this -

pay about $110 from http://www.adest.com.au and get a cd auto corrected (easiest, most reliable)

or

we could share info ourselves in a text file: eg

Correction DJS date OHLCV <- our manual text entries
DIV GNS date $ <- can be automatically sucked in from commsec data
Split GNS ratio <- problem - I have found no freely available list of splits.

Thoughts anyone?

If anyone has used float.com.au, you will see there are some holes in it.

They also update their files every hour from about 5pm to about 9pm, and I've noticed that the later files are usually different to the earlier ones - typically only with volumes, but for a while there with prices as well. Occasionally the early ones don't even include all the stocks. I generally get the 5pm file for early analysis but then always update with the 9pm file.

And there has been the odd occcasion where something's gone wrong with their database and no prices were updated for sometimes a few days. On those occasions I've got the prices from InvestorWeb instead, but they're usually not available for a couple of hours or so after the market close.

As a user of NAB online trading, I can also get the day's prices from them - even emailed to me - but the couple of times I tried it, the data didn't seem to be very accurate. That was just after the new service started though, so it may be better now. I should try it again.

Here is a US chart site...so you can get the charts and the share prices...20 minute delay in prices though.

Always remember to put au: then the stock code so you get the aussies share prices

If you need it in Metastock format, you can get a fully adjusted historical database for AUD$99 from

http://www.premiumdata.net/products/premiumdata/asxhistorical.php

The database also includes all delisted stocks too, which is far better for backtesting.

You could also use incrediblecharts.com There is a free service as well as a subscribed one with no ads! I love it and have subscribed (and no, I am in now way associated with the owners! )

Float.com.au is an excellent site because you can download an entire day's data, without having to specify particulars stocks. The site has been down this week. Does anyone know whether it is a temporary thing, or whether the site has closed down permanently?

I posted this in a similar thread in General Chat yesterday.

Float.com.au doesn't work for some reason, but http://www.ipo-australia.com/ has been working intermittently the past few days and it points to the same Float website. Very strange, seems to be a DNS or routing issue.

Give the IPO Aust address a go. Took me a couple of shots just then, but got through in the end.
