It does seem that this has been an ongoing question for several decades now. Now that we are staring down the the barrel of constitutional change in this regard, it would seem to be prudent to define aboriginality, even as the the government attempts semantical acrobatics on this point.

Yet, the Parliament (via the crossbench) refuses to address it.

So, what does it mean? What is an Aboriginal?

Regards,
A 100% British Aboriginal.

I don't know and I don't think anyone else does either.

It's not on Birth Certificates.

Wonder when we will all become just "Australians"

To answer Wayne's question it is my understanding that in Aboriginal tribal culture, the land where one is born is in fact your Tribe.

So, if you are born in Australia you are part of a tribe, in my case I was born an Awabakal but have lived most of my life as a Worimi.

Both tribes are part of the same major tribe, so I could qualify as a Aborigine if I filled out the stat dec.

Hmm what is an Aboriginal?
Lazy, hand out for hand-outs, drink a lots of woobla and complain about how unfair their life's lot is etc etc etc, ad nausium

It used to be 60%. I only know that number from living in Darwin in the late 90s and knowing people who got benefits because they were above 60%.

It seems the bar has been lowered.

The tricky thing about family tree percentages is that it can display in phenotype (and genotype for that matter) very differently. Lidia may be lowish percentage-wise, but she'd never be mistaken as fully white. There are people with that sort of percentage, however, that look like Vikings etc. Should this Voice get over the line (apparently has decent chance, though I'll be voting against it like any sensible person), I expect there's an assumption by the public that its reps will at least look a bit Aboriginal, at least for a while anyway,

And its a NO vote from me also. Plenty of representation in the bum warming House already

This thread beggars belief whites debating what an aboriginal is straight out of the 50’s the implications behind it all are…

How about asking an Aboriginal what an Australian is?

BTW polling is showing 80% of ATSI people support a voice.

More to the above what makes an Australian… a piece of paper.

As for the obsession re percentages if you have the genes as per my relative’s no matter the amount you get the health issues as well as they do.

The relative’s quality for the free handouts which they found to be of no benefit or advantage

Australian is a natiionality

Aboriginal is genetic, @IFocus. Interesting you immediately reach for the racist card, in that it's not surprising.

My concern is non Aboriginals impinging on Aboriginal decisions, as you Marxists are wont to do, so defining what it is, is important.

Might be a good idea to not get your knickers in a wad as your first option... Bro.

The implications are clear nothing to do with me.

If that was the case you would support the voice

Not the case just amazed at the sheer ignorance of the opinions expressed here.

Carry on

Interesting that Aboriginal genes allowed them to survive for 60,000 years, but now it's all the white man's fault that they are sick ?

No surprises they are sponsored by and represent white conservative politics same as you (assuming minus sponsorship ?)

If you ever followed Aboriginal history from white settlement you would know that Aboriginals were never subservient that goes for your conservative spouting hero’s the massacres Australia wide testament to their resistance.

To act against the aspirations of 80% (polling) of your own people is typical of conservative values totally in line with the values of the current Liberal Party

I haven't posted in this thread, but I think making it political is drawing a long bow, I would expect people on both sides of politics will vote both ways.
I doubt very many people will vote based on which party they follow, other than the rusted on few. :2twocents
