Well, I asked that question myself and quizzed the ABC.

Here is the reply:

Dear Roland,

Thank you for writing with this query.

On the 10th of June Andy Muirhead requested personal leave to allow him to deal with charges laid by Federal police. Collectors was off air for 4 weeks as the production team needed to re-structure the program and shoot fresh material. We returned to air Friday 9th July with Gordon, Adrian and Claudia sharing the hosting of the show.

Kind regards, and we hope you continue to enjoy the show.

Now a search in Google shows us why:

Collectors host Andy Muirhead charged with a child pornography offence

It's a shame that the Collectors show has had to change, Andy was a great presenter.

I understand that Andy has not yet been convicted, so one wonders if the ABC did the right thing with dumping him - considering that he could be innocent.....

Did you even read the article?

He has taken unpaid leave so it is a bit different to being dumped.

Muirhead, who hosts the popular TV show Collectors and a breakfast radio program on ABC Hobart, informed the network he faced a child pornography charge and would take unpaid leave, the ABC confirmed today
and
"Mr Muirhead will not present Collectors on ABC TV nor the breakfast program on ABC local radio in Tasmania pending the outcome of the legal proceedings," an spokesman said.

It comes down to community expectations and that the ABC is a very publicly visible organisation.

It is well known that even other criminals tend to view any offence relating to children as unacceptable, and that is a moral standard which applies throughout the community.

The ABC has been placed in a difficult situation, and I don't think they could really have left him on air whilst the charges are in progress. To do so would have quite likely sparked an outcry, loss of viewers etc. It would be different if he was an office worker or cleaner etc, but he is an on-air presenter of a national TV program such that his personal reputation does have a bearing on perceptions of his employer.

All that said, it is an unproven allegation at this stage. If he is convicted of an offence, then I'd expect his media career to be permanently over since no TV or radio broadcaster, either ABC or a commercial station, would want to be associated with someone with such a background.

Yes, and I also read the following:
Abandoning Andy Muirhead: ABC's act of betrayal

I wasn't really fielding for a personal attack, more of something of interest for others to do some additional research

Interesting that the quoted article has been removed from the ABC site.

It's fairly typical of their sensitivity to criticism that I have observed in other areas also.
