Hey all,

The great volcano ash of 2010 is well underway, with no sign of an end. Has this disrupted any of your plans? My sister in laws mother is heading back to the Old Country on Wednesday... doubt that will go ahead.

What about the effects on the airline companies... insured? Or losing money hand over foot?

My first thought... damn Goldman Sachs and Iceland stuffing everything up again. :

But, what with all the seemingly unusual earthquake and tsunami ativity around the world lately, and Goldman Sachs pleading 'innocent', mother earth has started to spit the dummy big time... the end of the world is nigh.

I applied for a copy of your data under the Freedom of Information Act, but unfortunately it appears you 'accidentally' destroyed the data when moving to a different premises... So I guess I'll just have to take your word for it.

Seriously, does anyone know if there are likely to be any longer term (months, years) effects on climate from this volcano?

I recall at least on previous incident where a major erruption dropped the global temperature by a measurable amount.

Yeah, Pinatubo in the early 90's lowered temps by nearly half a degree, but I don't think that this Icelandic volcano has pumped the ash high enough into the stratosphere for it to make any difference globally. It's likely to get rained down over time and will be restricted to the northern hemisphere anyway, assuming it stops sometime soon.
 
Below is a wiki excerpt about Mt St Helens eruption, which is a recent large eruption I can remember, Mt Pinatubo in PI is another one.

Apparently jets can fly, but they have to fly at an altitude much below normal.

As for climate effects, I dont think they are claiming this is a large eruption, I beleive their are different types, a very large one happened in 1815 in Indonesia at Mt Tambora, which affected the climate for a year.

If you really want to scare yourself, read up on super-volcanoes, 1 in Yellowstone Park, one at Lake Toba, and a couple of others. They dont go off very often but when they do, the climate is changed for years

There will be immense effects on the environment, far outweighing those of global warming.

Is this a media storm in a teacup? Spectacular as it may be on You Tube I’ve heard of no deaths, injuries or major infrastructure damage, and news (Yahoo and Reuters) that some planes in Europe could be up and running by mid-week. Okay it could cost the aviation industry millions, but this isn't exactly a 9/11 or sub prime.

The ice near the volcano would cool the lava and any rain and wind change forecast in the Northern hemisphere would clear the ash. Why should I sell my mining shares going back and forth to China for a temporary aviation crisis in Europe?

I just spent the weekend at one of them - Lake Taupo. Lovely spot, but one day will blow up the whole North Island again and mess up the climate for a while. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taupo_Volcano

ROTFL yes! The first thing I thought of.
 
Apparently the volcanic eruption has REDUCED carbon emissions into the atmosphere by grounding the planes. The volume of Co2 from the volcano is less than what the planes would spew into the atmosphere by about one third. Also the ash that is covering the sun has caused the temperature to drop over parts of Europe by one degree already. Hmmmmmmm ... conspiracy theorists (read global warming party) start your engines !

Count me in GG for the IoA. I think we need a secret codeword to identify the elite. Any suggestions?
 
Australia's chief mourner Quentin Bryce is stranded in Dubai and couldn't attend the funeral of the Polish President because of the ash.

However all is not lost. Istanbul is open so she will be able to attend the Gallipoli service. So her usual expensive outlay for mourning clothes will not be entirely wasted.

This catastrophe will have a greater effect on our Dear Earth than any global warming. The Institute of Ash will fight tirelessly to educate deniers and right wing apologists of the dire state that our world will be in should volcanoes erupt willy-nilly.


The movie is now bedded down. I will be the star. Spielberg is interested, very interested.


You fail to take into account all the incontrovertible data collected over the past 4 days and 4 nights.

You like all deniers will let our Dear Earth be covered in Ash.
