To Trade or not to trade?

I am in the process changing my life and lifestyle to reduce stress.

I am finding that trading on the market is far too time consuming, for little benefit and lots of stress, with much negativity from members.

Its is very difficult to stay positive in an environment where members cut you down at every turn. It would appear that many times I have justified my reasonings with charts, explanations, and announcements only for it to be hacked to bits. Looks like if you don't buy BHP or RIO then you are an outcast, and are going to fail not matter what.

Over the coming months I may sell all of my shares, pay off my debt and place the remainder monies in superannuation and live a carefree life.

I may also then log out of these stock discussion forums and never return. It may be some relief to myself and many others.

I seem to have lost all passion of late.

This is in no way an attack of this forum or its members, more of change of life for me. I reckon I am done with the stock market

Why does trading have to be tied in with this forum? Seems like all you need to do is take some time off visiting this place.

common Kris.

Faceless people effecting your lifestyle---

for little benefit and lots of stress

Says it all.
If its from the forum take a break---youve done it before so have I.
If its from the market then look at how to improve to the point that who cares your making the $$$s you want out of it in the way you feel comfotable with.

Regardless of what you do--enjoy life.---bugger the faceless army!!

Kris, just take a break, have a holiday, or even better take a cruise. I hear the good ship Batavia is about to set sail and there are a few spare berths. ;)
Look after yourself.

Sounds like a good idea. Without these forums tainting your judgement you might just find the key that you need to becoming consistantly profitable.

Or realise that trading just isn't for you...

Either way good luck. Money can't buy happiness

Hello Kris,

I'm not familiar with the threads where you say you are constantly being "cut down" - I only read those on stocks I hold - so I don't know if you're being over-sensitive or not.

I recall your comments on the "Depression" thread, saying that this has been a problem for you over some time. Your post today sounds like a combination of the way any depressed person will view most situations, i.e. pessimistically and negatively, and the sort of attitude that Rederob referred to, i.e. blaming others for your discomfort.

We've got to know you pretty well by now, Kris, and it's hard not to notice that most of the stuff which you are unhappy about is always someone else's fault. You say people cut you down. Perhaps they do if they don't agree with you. That's what a discussion forum is all about. Some people do it less politely than they should. That's their problem. But you have been pretty critical and less than polite yourself sometimes, so I guess you have to accept that no one feels any obligation to spare your feelings.

That said, I'm really sorry that you are feeling so disappointed with "where you are at".

Have you ever talked the disappointment, negativity and pessimism through with a good counsellor? If you haven't, you might find it helpful. A competent psychologist can help you find ways to approach life differently.

In the meantime, suggestions from others of taking a break, both from ASF and the stockmarket, sound sensible. My main suggestion would be to not make any irrevocable decisions, particularly financial ones, while you are feeling depressed.

All the best. I do hope you feel better soon.

Julia

I am going on a 5 day houseboat cruise next week up the Murray, great chance to just get away and unwind.

12 mates, plenty of grog, fishing, sun-tanning etc.

Guess I will decide when I come back to face the music and continue with the stock market or change pace of life.

Up the Murray. On a houseboat.. Is there enough water in the Murray for that??

This forums is probably the same as most internet forums, some people will agree with you, some people disagree, and every forum has their fair share of keyboard warriors that will attack anything you say. Like anything you do, if this forum or trading in general is causing you undue stress, then have a rest from it for a while. Maybe just put all your money in BHP or RIO and sit back and enjoy the money rolling in :)

Why not trade a mechanical system like tech trader ?

Seems like a system like this would solve most of the issues you have listed above, including time and dependency on others for tradings decisions.

This may sound like an odd question, but how is your health and fitness ?

This may be one area to concentrate on, which will have positive benefits in other areas of your life including trading and general well being.

The moderators have exercised their discretion with my earlier post in reply.
I guess I will just have to wait and see what nickname you turn up with next time.

Take it easy Kris, we all go through tough times, maybe trading isn't for you? Nothing wrong with that, or maybe try a robust mechanical system, techtrader is live and free so you can paper trade that out if you like, can't vouch for it myself as I can't provide financial advice but tech's your man if you have q's or any number of others who trade TT. Or try Nick Radge's services.

Your health and well being are more important than the ups and downs of the market. A breather and private study may well do you good, lots of libraries out there.

Good luck with it and have a great time on the Murray, that's what it's all about, relax outdoors with your mates and some good food and drink (and the fishing of course!!).

All the best with it!

If you lost your passion then you probably won't perform as well - so may as well take a break...

As for your health - you don't want to be like Mr Marcus Padley... :D

As with julia's comment - you may want to give Beyond Blue a visit

"To thine own self be true". You don't have to justify anything to anyone but yourself.

If you do continue trading avoid going near any posts on stocks that you hold. Too many people use these forums as some form of free tip sheet. If you continue to visit here then stick to Trading Strategies and systems type posts - especially ones that focus on reducing time spent trading!

best wishes

Well said stevo....trade your knowledge not what others/brokers/forum detectives think/say.
Cheers.

TraderPro,

Thank you for posting that Marcus Padley link. It's really worth reading, for me especially the bit about "small resource stocks".

I've mostly been an investor for the fairly long term in blue chip stocks. I'm comfortable with the sense of security they provide, along with the reliable healthy dividends and franking credits.

Recently I thought I was being too conservative and have had a punt on a speccie. Came a cropper! It has been a rather expensive way of reminding myself to stay within my comfort zone.

So, Kris (STC) if you're reading this, perhaps a change from active trading to a more conservative approach might allow you to feel better, and simply put your funds at less risk.
