International testing of school students has found Australia is failing to keep pace with much of the developed world in science and maths.
Every four years, the international testing looks at the proficiency of science and maths students in years 4 and 8.
Although Australia's ranking and overall scores are similar to the last tests for those in year 4, there are falls for year 8 students.
In maths and science, Australia is now below many Asian countries like Japan and Singapore, as well as England, the US and Russia.
When it comes to maths, 40 per cent of Korean students are in the top bracket, compared to only 6 per cent of Australian students.
