The Science Thread

I don't know if this is accurate, but it is where the aero industry is heading.

The bottom line is, how much fuel does it need to make that 50 minute flight at hypersonic speeds?
At the rarified atmospherrc heights are they relying on mainly thrust to keep them at height?
The lift they would get from the airflow would be miniscule.
At those heights you start to get into the graveyard area where stall speed approaches cruise speed.
Ok for military use where a pilot and co pilot can eject.
Not much use for carrying passengers.

I think for these flights altitudes, you do it more like a ballistic missile than an actual flying plane, do not need lift

the problem is, you need slow flight to takeoff and climb to intermediate levels.
Ballistic speeds and the acceleration create G forces that would kill us mere mortals.
Mick
True unless you have more like a rocket start, or variable wings, scram jets, etc the work for the engineers.
But we both agree..h2 pathetic energy density makes it unlikely but for shorter flight..
Or kamikase mission strapped to nitrogen cooled super high pressure brittle leaky tanks .can not wait☺️

For a sure - fire cockroach whacking technique , tune in to the last 5 minutes of yesterday 's " Dr. Karl's Triple J podcast " ( 22 nd August ) Yes , it 's all based on science , too . Believe it or not !

I came across this report from a US research group in 2021. Appears to be an identical process. Interesting to see how they are progressing.

Another fine example of where the consensus held back new discoveries .
Especially when the discoveries were put forward by a woman..

The so far fruitless search for dark matter.

What a bunch of WIMPS.

They are looking in all the wrong places.
I would be heading straight for Mar-A-Largo.
After all, trump has stolen everything else.

Actually, it once again highlights that "The Science" is never ever settled.
Dark matter was invented as a way of providing something that would tie in all the loose ends that cannot be explained via Einsteins theory of Relativity or the Standard Model of particle Physics.
It is equally possible that the concept of dark matter is a fools dream, just like the 19th century theory of a Luminiferous Aether that would explain the motions of the planets among other things.
Sir Isaac Newtons , brilliant thinker and scientist that he was, was a strong supporter of the theory of the Aether.
James Maxwell was also a big fan of the Aether theory to help overcpme some observable data anamolies.
It was Einsteins Theory of Relativity that effectively killed off the Luminiferous Aaether theory.
Perhaps its time to quietly send dark matter to the same round bin.
There are plenty of scientists who are looking for something other than dark matter to explain those pesky data points that point to failures in the theory.

Dark matter and dark energy, not observable.
100% with you. I reckon something is being missed.

China-developed photovoltaic nuclear battery could run for centuries: scientists | South China Morning Post https://www.scmp.com/news/china/sci...uclear-battery-could-run-centuries-scientists
I like the concept:
In layman's terms,a "solar" panel wrapped around a mini source of nuclear isotopes catching alpha rays instead of sun rays: 24/7 for centuries...
Imagine these batteries in satellites, outer space, underground or under sea for sensors, or in pacemakers/body sensors for life ...👍
They will keep kicking in the coffins for centuries after your death too
Talk about leaving a legacy 😂

An interesting development in IC design sees techos at MIT create thin film 3D printed IC's that do not rely on semiconductors.
Looks great in theory, just need to see how the application goes in mass produced cheap devices.

From yesterday ( 24 th October ) Dr. Karl's JJJ podcast : a crack in an 1898 dead Kenyan Tsavo region lion's tooth from Chicago's natural history museum has revealed ....guess what ? Human DNA !
More to the story on-line , too .
