I remember sailing through the Milford sounds on a cruiseship and all these sicks pups were sitting in the Casino pumping in their $ and ignoring some of the most beautiful scenery in the world ....

Losers.

We all make our choices. If people choose to gamble then they have to accept the consequences.

Let's not have more laws to protect people from themselves.
Too much of a damn nanny state already.

What annoys me is how it's the poorer suburbs where the majority of the 24 hour pubs with pokies are located. That's pretty blatant targetting of a certain group in society and the exact opposite of the thinking behind the location of Australia's first legal casino in the 70's well away from anything and in an already very wealthy suburb.

Getting past the cliches of the filthy rich and idle poor, this is an issue of the predatory behavior exercised by some of the wealthy.
It is particularly visible and irksome in the world of gambling, probably because it is a pursuit that doesn't actually produce products or community benefit but merely seeks to disproportionately redistribute wealth to the very pointy end of it's own corporate tree at the direct expense of those at the bottom.
The gold toothed rats that control these "businesses" prey directly on the most vulnerable and can sometimes be heard to claim what they do is not illegal, a pathetic refuge at best.
While we are all largely responsible for our own fate the reality is that there are parts of society that need support or at least shouldn't blatently have their pockets picked.

Exactly. That's the issue I have with deliberately putting so many pokies in the poorer suburbs, putting casinos in train stations and so on. Legal certainly, but the owners know full well that they're putting them right next to those who are more likely to need support.

Another rather blatant one was a casino advertisement at a bus stop in a very working class suburb. I don't remember the exact words, but it was basically telling people to get a life - by gambling.

Fair enough to run a legitimate business and make a profit. And I'm not opposed to gambling per se. But I do think there needs to be some moral boundaries and advertisements like that are overstepping what's reasonable. Remember - you don't have a life if you're not gambling. Hmm... :(

Have you noticed that the rich work a 12 hour Day, six days of the week as well.:D
I thought it was 8 days a week, 25 hours a day, 500 days a year. And they used to walk 200 miles to school in bare feet and eat rocks for lunch.

No pokies in WA, and let's keep it that way. Although I believe we lead the nation in money spent on lotto (I could be wrong on this). We don't have the RSL clubs, League clubs, etc., and I think we are better off for it.

Unfortunately the pokies do target the poorer areas because they tend to be the sort of people who hang to a dream of "the big win". Personally I think they should be banned nationally.
