There are still long term issues which I wonder if he's willing to face, like whether we should be allowing private interests such control over essential services, or cleaning up the inefficiencies in the system that Smurf has been pointing out for some time.

Good move. Keeps him busy. Also helps in consultations as he was a previous PM in the same colour as the existing PM.

Interesting wouldn't have thought he would have been the best choice, he must be better connected to the Republican side than I thought certainly knows how to work hard and has a very high intellect hope he has his groveling technic down pat.

Albo's not stupid he just wants him out of the local papers, give him something to do in a far away land, where no one hears from him for 5 years.

I was enjoying the political silence from the media till I realised it's because Labor hasn't done anything.

Hopefully Albo changes his mind on the cashless welfare card, otherwise it will be an albatross in two years time. IMO.
He is setting up a lot of measurable targets, that will become targets, not a good move IMO.
It is early in the Government cycle, much easier to make adjustments now, than just before an election.
Time will tell.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has resisted calls from the opposition to reinstate the cashless debit card program.
Speaking from WA, Opposition Leader Peter Dutton and Nationals Leader David Littleproud called on the prime minister to reinstate the cashless debit card (CDC), saying its removal was responsible for a spike in alcohol-fuelled violence in regional and remote towns.

Mr Albanese, who was also in the state on his ninth visit since being elected last May, defended the federal government's newly created SmartCard against the opposition's claims it was a "waste of time and money" due to its voluntary status.

During a brief stopover in Kalgoorlie-Boulder today, Mr Albanese was asked if it was a mistake to abolish the CDC program before additional support services were introduced.

"It was based upon the advice we received," Mr Albanese said in an interview with ABC Goldfields.

The prime minister said he hoped the SmartCard would help address what he called "intergenerational disadvantage".

"We will continue to work through these issues," he said.

"A lot of it, of course, is about creating opportunity for people, overcoming educational disadvantage.

The Libs will be pushing merde uphill to persuade people to ditch Labour becasue of the actions on large super funds. Even their own supporters and the well off super fund owners are onside with the decision.

The poll done by The Australian echoes these figures.

The Albanese government’s plan to reduce the generosity of tax concessions for people with superannuation balances over $3m is supported by 50% of Guardian Essential poll respondents – and the move is more popular among those with higher balances.

The latest survey of 1,141 voters finds 50% endorse Labor’s recent super tax shift, while 31% are on the fence and 19% oppose the change. It also finds 55% would support a further crackdown on family trusts.

Most respondents (70%) who are aged under 55 and have less than $3m in their super account believe they will never accumulate that much. Only 23% of this cohort believe it is likely they will hit $3m.

Perhaps counterintuitively, the new poll indicates Labor’s decision to limit tax concessions for wealthy retirees is more popular among voters with higher accumulated superannuation balances.

Last week’s policy shift is supported by 55% of respondents with balances between $100,000 and $199,000, 58% of respondents with balances between $200,000 and $499,000, and 53% of people with balances of half a million dollars or more.

The survey also suggests voters have a clear understanding about the policy rationale for capping concessions.

More than half (59%) of respondents think the government wants to ensure super is used as retirement income and not as a tax shelter for the rich, 58% believe the change is about paying down debt and freeing up funds for services, while 52% say the policy is about making the system fairer and more sustainable.

Only 38% of respondents see the change as a strike against aspiration, or a broken election promise. The latest Guardian Essential data also indicates there is some community appetite to tighten up the rules governing family trusts to stop wealthy people engaging in tax minimisation (55% of respondents support that idea, 31% are on the fence and 15% oppose it).

Too early to talk about polls... preferred PM polls are the same as they were after the 2019 election... 50% for the PM and 30% for the opposition leader.

The super tax makes sense... at least more sense than Abbott's super tax on low income earners.
