I find COPS to be the absolute best reality tv show ever created...and after 22seasons and over 750 episodes lots of other people do as well.
The US police do not spend one second wasting time or mucking around. They get right down to business straight away. Suspects get their couple of warnings to obey orders and if they dont, they get taken down or tasered (much to my delight). Its great to see first hand how both the police and the suspects handle the situation. One thing ive noticed is that most suspects will try and evade police (a natural reaction) and resist etc... but once caught and they know the game is over they become courteous, helpful and respectful.
I think the police in the USA are respected alot more than the Australian police. I think it mainly boils down to the fact that US citizens know that if they mess around or smart mouth their police then they will be spread eagled on the ground straight away. I also think the public have alot more pride in the US police. They are ALWAYS addressed as corporal, officer, sir, or ma'am.
One other thing ive noticed is that on any sort of call where a suspect is going to be arrested, whether it be for drugs, solicitation, car chase, fighting, whatever, back up is always called and upwards of four or more officers are on hand.
With higher crime rates and the prevalence of guns in the US its only natural that their police force have to have their witts about them constantly and keep the situation under control with force and command straight away. Some could look at that as a sad reflection on their society, as our police force do not need to take that sort of action to everyone straight up.
One thing is that with the US consitution and the bill of rights, both police and suspects are well aware of their rights and what can and cant be done. I feel that in australia it is really only the police who know the laws and what can and cant be done in regards to the rights of citizens and detainment and searches etc...
