Our Dear Prime Minister seems intent on taxing the most vulnerable, the poor , the disadvantaged, indigenous, and mentally ill by his tax on cigarettes and alcohol.

These people are the most disadvantaged amongst us and all this will do is put pressure on the poor beset by debts to drug dealers, loan sharks and banks.

I've done some work with Voluntary organisations at the coalface,

Rich bastards like me and little Kevie can afford to buy fine wines, and good cigars.

Perhaps a tax on Godbotherers and their organisations would garner useful funds rather than flogging the poor.

Kevie walks solemnly every Sunday into church, let him pay $10 a hit as the poor will do for a pack of Wiinie blues.

They're poor because their job (if they have one) doesn't pay them very much. Cigarettes just lighten their wallet by 10%+ and their life expectancy by a decade or so (just a guess).

Do religious organisations currently pay tax?

GG - I think you've misunderstood the intent of the legislation.

It is just one step in a complex system of processes designed to strongly disencourage the habits of those addicted to long term harmful drugs, thereby providing future relief to the national health care system, Centrelink and Charitable organisations, potentially in the form of billions of dollars. Can we afford NOT to increase alcohol and cigs?

It is certainly NOT an increase in tax. Where did you get that crass idea from?

Duckman

Generally no, but it depends on their taxation status with the Tax office. They are usually classified as not-for-profit organisations and get rebates or refunds (usually in GST credits) for the GST and sales tax they pay.

And they wonder why the 'Exclusive Bretheren' are so asset rich.....and trying to influence fiscal policy with donations to major political parties.:cautious:

Two thirds of our public hospitals are full of patients who are there as a direct result of alcohol and cigarettes. Think heart and lung disease, cancers and alcohol related trauma.

People needing hernia ops and knee replacements can't get into our public hospitals because of the selfish habits of a minority of our society.

Our entire public hospital system would be cured of all its overcrowding and resource problems in one clean sweep if smoking became illegal.

I hope when you get older gg, you dont need a public bed.

i agree

if they're poor they probably shouldnt be wasting their money by smoking and drinking............ and then expecting the tax payer to pick up the hospital bill

Well actually you will find that people in sh!tty jobs need smokes and a few drinks to do the work. So don't be so condescending bro. I'm sure if you were in the same situation you would also like a little luxury in your life.

No people who need hernia op knee replacements etc can't get into hospital because of our sh!tty state and federal governments.

And banning cigarettes, lol why not make maccas and junk food illegal while you are at it. Or perhaps you condone the fat slobs that make up the vast majority of Australia's populace.

Well it may be the right thing to do, but it still boils down to taxing the poor no matter how you look at it.

If the Government was serious about the problems these things cause society, then they should ban them.

And I would be most interested to see the figures between the tax take on smokes / alcohol compared with the actual health care costs if you have them?

Cheers

Mate I can follow your line of thinking, but Kev and the Labor Party are following the Pommy line of State control over personal choice.

The Poms have so many cameras now on street corners they have to employ criminals to monitor them.

Kev's thinking is that it would be great if people didn't drink , smoke or root and avoid cancer, liver disease and the clap.

To me that takes all the fun out of life and at the end of the day life is a gamble.

All the pain that religion has caused should be taxed at the entrance of churches by a $10 payment so that the godbotherers can contribute to the common good.

Im completely ok with you doing whatever you want to yourself, but when you get your first chest pain, call the ambo and get admitted to a public ICU, because private hospitals dont have ICU, then you are suddenly society's problem. That's when the rest of us are paying. In bed space and costs.

Ofcourse if you choose to stay at home and ride out the chest pain, feel free.

And people stuck up mountains who get lost.
And athletes who have brain injuries
And drivers who drive too fast and have a prang
etc etc etc

Get real mate. the thread is about taxing godbotherers entering church of a Friday, Saturday or Sunday from any of the major religions to atone for their sins.

$10 each.

Its not much.

The thread by

How about useless MPs who think they have the right to wander off by themselves in the bush, and waste more taxpayers money saving their useless behinds.

Ok, so Im not discussing godbotherers, whatever they are.
And you may be bored and just trolling.
But there is a far more important topic you rose.
Your opening sentence is about higher taxes on alcohol and cigarettes.
You seem against this. I am for it.
A higher tax on cigarettes and alcohol would directly lead to less strain on our hospitals.
Every winter our hospitals are overflowing with emphysema and bronchitis patients, and no-one else can get a bed.
I think Kev is doing a good job. And seeing as there is no credible alternative in Australian politics at the moment, long live Kev and his unhealthy taxes.

Mate, what are the hospitals overflowing with every summer?

Most diggers over the last 2 centuries have smoked and drank.

Your type of recipe for a clean society is a Rudd godbothring praxis.

All godbotherers should pay $10 on entry to a church, mosque, synagogue, or shrine, and when they turn on the TV to watch some constipated Yank spill his or her spiel to insomniacs.

Rudd should pay $100 because he should know better.

For once I actually agree with Garpal Gumnut. What the fu*k is with society (government) trying to police what is healthy for us these days?

Like on the news the other day, "Should energy drinks get banned"? Why? Because some ******** year 7 students were doing shots of it before school and had some health problems. Boo fu*ken hoo.

And Broadway, where did you get your figures for 2/3s of people in hospital are from smoking/alcohol problems? Because I think that is bull****.

All the the do gooder's out there need to harden the f*ck up and leave everyone else to make up there own mind as to what they do in their spare time. We're not all retards and are quite capable of making our own decisions and living with the consequences.
