Can any Sydney residents offer advice about where to stay.
We plan to spend a week in Sydney from 6 - 13 January 2008.

At this stage looking at:
Quay West Suites, The Rocks (about $400 per night for a harbour view apartment)
and
Goldsborough Apartments, Darling Harbour ($182 per night)

Just wondering whether the different locations can justify the difference in price. Quay West is a hotel as well so has full hotel services.

Any other suggestions?

We don't mind what we pay (within reason) but would like a view and a good location, within walking distance of Darling Harbour, CBD, The Rocks, Circular Quay, and close to monorail or other convenient transport.

Anything else we should look out for?

$4 a night should cover it
I'll throw in the mosquito repellent and the possum moat

PS bludy miles to walk to the CBD though

Noise.

Was in Sydney about 4 months ago. Cheap hotel about half your price range but OK apart from one thing - NOISE!

Only time in my life I have EVER had a problem getting sleep due to noise. Roaring air-conditioners, trains, factories, aircraft - never had a problem sleeping with any of those. Likewise never had a problem getting to sleep right next to a nightclub in Adelaide or near a train station in Melbourne.

But the traffic noise on Darlinghurst Rd (yeah I know, not a good location but it was cheap) was incredible. That plus every time someone shut their door it sounded like thunder. Nice holiday but I fell asleap on the plane on the way home. Yep, a plane full of people was quieter than that hotel.

Noise is something I'll certainly be checking out next time I go to Sydney. Probably not such a problem in the more expensive hotels though I assume.
 


The Quay West is definately the better of the two. Also down that end of town (The Rocks) is The Observatory Hotel which is quite good.
 
The Park Hyatt is nice
From about $500-600 a nite but PRIME location.
 
last week I stayed a few nights at the Sofitel Wentworth

on wotif you can get a deluxe suite for about $400 a night - seperate living room, marble bathroom etc - it also includes access to the executive club with complimentary champagne, high tea, breakfast etc

the service at this hotel is awesome!
 
Try a self catering apartment at World Square.
My mate stuck his parents in there when they were over for his wedding. They said it was good value.

I have stayed at Quay Grand which is the sister hotel and it is great. I think you would enjoy Quay West if you can pay for a harbour view. Look up Quay Grand on the cheap internet sites, as with Quay West either side of the building has very different views, naturally water views command higher prices. Stay away from the lower George Street area the northern part of Sydney is the best. Catch the ferry to Manly and have fish and chips at Watsons Bay. All the best.

I have stayed at Quay West many times and it is a terrific place to stay with a harbour/opera house view. Its also nice to have the extra room of an apartment as well as kitchen just even for breakfast or snacks. The facilities there are terrific and you can easily walk to Circular Quay for regular ferry service around to Darling Harbour. Personally I find Darling Harbour too touristy (aimed at o/s tourists, particularly from asia) to stay there. QW is a much better choice and all the transport is virtually at your door to go anywhere and everywhere.

While your there book in for lunch at Cafe Sydney its a 5 minute walk away and sits above Circular Quay overlooking the harbour, great food and great service.
 
The Goldsbrough is run by Oaks Property, they are serviced apartments. Check out there web site Oaks property they have a few buildings they run serviced apartments from mainly meriton apartments, so the rooms are like full apartments http://www.theoaksgroup.com.au/

Quay west is more up market and in the Rocks end of town..
Depends where you want to go and have access too

Novotel rockford Sydney Darlingharbour is in a good location and reasonable affordable.. It is on the edge of darlingharbour and chinese gardens and a minute walk to monorail and china town.. bit further from circular quay but easy on the mono rail..

Swiss hotel on market street is a great location if you want to be smack bang in the middle of shopping etc.. its pretty much next door to centre point and midcity centre etc..
 
We allways stay at the Novatel on darling harbour .it was about $200 a night for a harbour view room with a monorail station just downstairs walkins distance to the casino and plenty of restaurants. Also kids eat free at breakfast and if you join up with Accor advantage plus you get one night accomadation free/year at any of there associated hotels ,and meals are two for one so you can get breakfast for two adults $27 from memory and kids are free. It,s probably only four star buy suits us

Blue Hotel is an interesting place to stay at the finger wharf at Woolloomooloo.

The two storey loft suites are amazing!

Quay west has a brilliant pool (up about 20 storeys) - double storey height - gold leaf columns etc.

but beware - one side of the pool is a glass window where other guests can congregate

We just enjoyed a fantastic 5 night stay at Shangri-La, Sydney. We booked (through Expedia website - with one night free) a Premier Harbour View Room ie is one of the corner suites (rooms ending in 13). The hotel is 5 star but I think we got it around $300ish per night with Expedia being the cheapest rate.

We had the most amazing view over Sydney Harbour including the Harbour Bridge and Opera House. The room was huge and the service second to none. The staff are all extremely customer friendly and professional. All our room service orders, whether it be breakfast or dinner, were set up on a table next to the window (or wherever we chose) so we could eat while taking in the view.

We also found the location great. It is in the Rocks area, handy to Circular Quay and not too far a walk into the CBD for shopping. We stayed in 1513 and noted down the number as we know we will want to go back for a weekend sometime. An awesome experience.

We've booked Quay West with harbour view apartment.

Before confirming the booking through the internet agency www.m-power.net
I checked various other internet sites for the same property and also phoned the property direct. Interesting results.

The other internet agencies said they could offer nothing for those dates and if we'd booked direct with the hotel, the apartment for which we are paying $389 per night via m-power would have been $520!!!

Is that me in the pool? Sadly, no.
Actually haven't been yet. For various reasons we have postponed it.
Now going the first week in March. Will report back afterwards.

whatever you do, don't forget to pack a small bottle of dishwashing liquid and a sponge. When you get to your room just wash the glassware you are going to use. The other night ACA had a story about how these things are cleaned that instantly made me think, yep I can believe that! nothing that they showed seemed improbable, having worked with people who did those type of jobs I'd heard it all before but to see that type of shoddy behaviour in an expensive hotel,anyway, enjoy your holiday, by the way who is, we. If that's not too personal a question.
 
Goodness, Visual, perhaps we'd better take the sheets off the bed and wash them, scrub out the bathroom, and disinfect the TV remote as well!
You've just reminded me why I never watch ACA or its competitor.
