What a joke, who in the USA in this economic climate will listen to a boring no hoper like Swan about investing money on the other side of the world - this is just a freebie holiday masked as work.

Swan heading to US to promote Australia's potential

Federal Treasurer Wayne Swan is travelling to New York to promote Australia to potential investors and tourists.

Mr Swan will also meet key financial figures including members of the New York Reserve Bank but he will not be meeting anyone from the incoming Obama administration.

Mr Swan says it is important to promote Australia overseas.

"It's a pretty full program, it's a short one but it's very important to be there to underscore the importance of the 'G'Day USA' program, to reinforce the fact that this is a great place to invest, a great place to do business and also a great place to visit," he said.

Looks like Mr Swan has forgotten that these companies/people dont have any spare cash to invest ..... their too busy trying to save themselves.

well schiff and others in the doom patrol are advising people park their money offshore into commodities and so on, it' probably a good time to head over to the states and sing the praises of our stable banking and political systems and abundant commodities in an effort to attract $US.

if only the guy had charisma. we should send kylie.

So you disagree with the above then? - and to just scrap the G'Day USA event altogether? And presume you think international investment and tourism are like, not that important to bother promoting or sending any representative to.

I hear you - Mel Gibson and Kylie should be enough to generate several billion, but don't think it hurts to send a long someone from the actual Government...

Any thought of trying to promote tourism and investment in the USA right now when they cant even pay their bills over there is a poor excuse for leaving Australia for a junket, it's disgraceful.

They say in advertising, when times are good business wants to advertise, when times are bad, business needs to advertise.

I see no difference to a country. In reality the 5,10,50 thousand it costs to have a delegation there is nothing in comparison to the potential and current market.

I'll admit though, Swan's hardly the best choice as far as charisma goes, and agree, it probably was his turn.

Yes I think what grates most is that it is Swan doing this there are far better people to send, much more respected in the USA than Swan, actors and so on, it's a PR exercise and I think Cate Blanchette or (who else is there) would be glad to do a small tute on tourism and go wave the flag for us.

Anything that is good for the country is good. I support Australians going overseas selling the investment opportunities that are available. I don't support UN oriented trips such as the one's the PM takes. Give Mr Swan a break.
