So the Yellowstone Supervolcano just had a bit of a bigger burp than usual at one of the geysers. Maybe the Chinese and Russians just have to sit back, watch and wait.

Looked pretty impressive on the TV last night. Lucky no one was injured or killed.
Always doubtful about being near one of these.
Viewing from a safe distance would be my policy.

The thing is Yellowstone is a super volcano, if that actually has a major eruption it would basically take out the whole of the Western United States, massively bigger than that Mt St Helens, Krakatoa or any of those.

Incidentally New Zealand has their own super volcano brewing away there on the North island. Lake Taupo and indeed Lake Rotorua are both giant calderas up to 50 km wide.

The last time Taupo blew up it was visible and recorded from China.

IIRC, Yellowstone is substantively bigger.

When we lived in NZ many moons ago, there was an 8inch bore hole at Rotorua, and then it started to grow into a giant one. I think if the grey cells are accurate it eventually burnt itself out over time.
