Our Premier Mike Rann has been under the gun recently for not bringing in new blood to replace the older, less functional cabinet Ministers. Now, he does have to appease the factions, so in the last couple of months he appointed Tom Koutsantonis to be Road Safety Minister. He appears rather like a bully and seems to be in the media daily about his plans to crush hoon cars after two offences.

The breaking story in our media is that Koutsantonis has had 30 driving offences since 1994; 27 involving speed offences (20 - 30 k's over the limit); three red light convictions, and 1 for speaking on a mobile phone. He has lost his licence, and paid over $10,000 in fines.

Love this - he says "I am guilty of speeding just as much as everyone else.''

27 Freaking times!

And this:
Magistrates Court records show the new minister - who now has a chauffeur-driven Government car - still has two outstanding unpaid fines worth a total of $948. One of those dates back to May 2007.
A fine of $538 for running a red light on May 7, 2008, is also unpaid.
As recently as Wednesday, Mr Koutsantonis, a former taxi driver, branded speeding motorists as "stupid and shameful''.
On March 29, he told the Sunday Mail: "Extreme behaviour on our roads, such as speeding, is unacceptable and won't be tolerated.''
On March 30, he went further: "Unfortunately, you can't legislate to avoid stupidity.''

And this
At his first press conference as Road Safety Minister in early March, he said he was "sick and tired of idiots driving on our streets . ."
The minister also has said: "The real effects of reckless driving and speeding are death, injury and damage. The real consequence is emergency workers performing gruesome work and police knocking on the door of a family home to tell parents that their son or daughter is never coming home. People on our roads who drive their cars as if they have a right to kill and take another innocent life . . . it's not a road safety (issue), it's a crime. It's a criminal act.''

Did I also mention he is Minister for Correctional Services?

A victim of his own revenue raising.

One thing I did notice however was 30 offences and not 1 driving suspension.

How's that work?
From the list published he would have been banned for 3 mths every year!

He was disqualified once, but won it back on appeal; but that only accounts for perhaps four fines. And those points take ages to be deleted, so he would have accumulated at a rapid rate. Yes, he should have lost his licence multiple times. There is something smelly here! His last offence was as recent as February this year!

He's clearly a HOON.

Crush his car!

Seems to be fashionable to have a Transport Minister with a heavy foot.
In Qld we likewise have a new Transport Minister in the person of a Rachel Nolan who has been repeatedly fined for speeding.

Beyond belief that governments can be so careless of public opinion that they can appoint such hypocrites.

Our minister has even less right to conduct himself in this manner... SA is THE police state. When you don't have any population, you have to compensate by placing speed cameras on every street... those tax dollars have to come from somewhere (and no I haven't been caught speeding lately )

Mike Rann, you are a disgrace - show him the door!

I have a few points left.

Got done on 2 occasions a week apart with change of speed signage. When pulled over and asked why I was speeding I was sure I wasnt!
12 mths later I havent seen a gun OR camera on these 2 stretches since!--So agree re revenue.

Yet often I hear idiots at 120km/hr + at 12-4 in the morning flying down the main road close by---its a 60 zone---and hey its late who wants to pay overtime!
Guess when the fatalities on this road generally occur?

Well, he's gone in 60 seconds!

What a creep. Today on the radio he said that he takes full responsibility for the fines, then said it was his family who did the speeding and not him. Then refused to say how many times they did it.

Oh yeah, and those unpaid fines from 2007 were paid this morning. He also said that this was actually a good thing because it meant we were talking about road safety. Um, no Tom, we are talking about your appalling traffic record.

I still think he doesnt get why there is community outrage about someone like him? Rann would be spewing - he didnt want to appoint him in the first place, but because of all the factions in the Labor party who ensure Rann is Premier, he had to appoint him. All of a month ago!

yeah hes gone in 60 seconds alright
he has just quit his position

Excellent.
Now to the car crushing to really make a statement.
Seriously what an opportunity to show the public that its not one set of rules for them and another for us.

I think Mike Rann is out of puff. This is a major slip up. This guy should be in jail, not parliament - yet no-one picked this up before appointing him?
Like he's gonna get voted in next election anyway...

I regularly drive a 1300 km round trip in SA - to Adelaide. Not unusual to be passed by 50-60 drivers per trip - with me doing 110kph.
Some go past at up to 150kph.
Overtaking around blind corners at night = twice per trip.
Illegal overtaking on double lines = 5 times per trip.

I'm surprised more people don't die on the roads...

I say - put speed cameras every 1km on our highways - drop the fines from $200 bucks to $20 bucks.
Government will make an absolute fortune. Then they can finally get rid of payroll tax and stamp duty.

I know I will very rarely pay my $20 bucks. Will you??

Several years ago the transport and infrastructure minister from the previous Labor government in WA (Alannah McTiernan) was caught speeding (by some considerable margin through a town). If memory serves me correct she also had a history of previous traffic offences which may have included drink driving.

As a consequence she lost the road safety component of her portfolio.
