Small Digital Cameras - any advice?

This li'l gal has some money burning a hole in her birthday pocket. Her pockets are only little (I know, this is a surprise :eek: ) so she needs a camera that will fit in them, er, it!

I am thinking Canon IXUS 55 or KodakV550, and the Sony cybershot.

Does anyone have any advice pretty please?
 
I have the cybershot T5 and it is fantastic! small enough to fit comfortably in your pocket but still can take awesome pics.
 
Depends on the price you want to pay, but I love my Nikon Coolpix P1. It's a small 8 megapixel camera with a large LCD display and lots of options. Even has WiFi to transfer files to your PC (although just whacking the memory card into a USB card reader is much faster).

My wife uses Nikon Coolpix S4 - a 6 Megapixel camera with 10x telephoto lens which can be swivelled. It has a large bright LCD screen which works well in all but very bright light conditions. The Nikkor lens system is a top performer, well ahead of the Leica system on my Panasonic. Her pictures are crisp, mine are soft.

She is a keen photographer and the camera being small, light, and very usable is always with her. It usually resides on the kitchen table.

Try to take a few pictures of something moving in the store first eg people walking by.

I bought a cheap ($300) 5 megapixel camera, and there is about a 1s delay between pressing button and getting picture, so it is absolutely useless. We take the kids to a carnival and always get photos of someone elses children on the rides. :swear:

iv got a canon IXUS400 bought nearly 3 years ago for what now seems like an obscene amount of money for only a 4-megapixel; but it was one of the best in its days

the IXUS 55 is pretty much similar except a bit thinner and a larger LCD

iv had no problems with it at all

I own the Canon.
Great camera. It takes great video also and is so tiny!
I looked into it by looking at different camera reviews and Canon had the best rap. The new Kodak camera though is pretty hot also and was not available at that time and looks like a great competitor. I particularly like the two lense system. I think you have chosen two of the best cameras available in this bracket.

I would not consider the Sony, it is definitely inferior, in size, technology and picture quality. (though the brand name still has "cache")

Make sure you get a large memory card as part of the deal!
 
I'd avoid anything from Sony unless you want major hassles with warranty issues and incompetence in any repairs.

Just my opinion but Sony have stuffed me around with a big screen tv and I refuse to say anything good about them regarding after sales service
 
Also with Sony you HAVE to buy their accessories, naturally they are a bit dearer than generic stuff........memory cards etc

I have a Canon powershot A620 , good camera but may be a bit big for you.

I found the best deal JB HiFi, camera and spare cards, recharger.....ask for a deal then make a close offer :)
 
agree with above statements on the Sony...

I have a Panasonic Fx8, 5meg, 3x optical zoom, Lumix Lens, very compact camera... added bonus of image stabilizer... for great videos and night mode shots... for the price was the best value around...

pretty much it was down to the Canon Ixus and the Panasonic... I chose panasonic in the end and haven't regretted it one bit...

I think when your making your comparisons, make sure you include the Panasonic in there...

things to look for...
speed of taking the second photo
unlimited video lenghts with audio
bright screen
good battery life...
support for SD card... cheapest storage around...
 
I've a canon ixus 40 (3 years old) I like it the big lcd screen a nice feature...takes good photo's and has a really long battery life :)
 
I got an email this morning from a Canadian mate who does a lot of photography telling me about his new Canon SD770. His comments about my attitude to cameras are right on and about our attitude to spending are right off. I don't know what that says about his comments on the camera, but it's another opinion to confuse you:

To put this camera into perspective, it's about the size of a very small cell phone or about 10% bigger than your average credit card.
I know you don't like cameras, never use a camera, hate to spend money on anything, live with a miser, yada yada yada, but it's an extremely clever piece of kit. I REALLY like it and I'd advise people whose needs are modest (it's basically a very high quality point 'n shoot) and who hate being burdened with a camera to get one. There are lots of tiny cameras; there are vanishingly few USABLE tiny cameras that also produce first rate pictures (this one will make 8x10s no problem).

And, with the coupon in the camera box, I got a Canon Selphy CP710 dye-sub photo printer. Also very small--about 8" x 4". Only prints 4x6 (postcard size) pics, but they're extremely high quality, and that's all you need in many cases. Cost is about 35 cents an image. You plug the memory card in the front (or hook the camera to the printer with the built-in USB cord), fiddle a couple of buttons (what type of paper, how many prints, date stamped or not), and hit the print button. Wallah, a print 53 seconds later. Because it's a dye-sub, there's no inkjet cartridges to dry out because you haven't used the printer this month.

The combo of the SD700 and Selphy printer would probably do all you want for the rest of your life photographically. You should check it out and get Mr. Miser to buy you the pair. Australian prices--probably not a penny less than $50,000. Canadian prices, the pair plus a 1GB SD memory card is around $1,000.
