I am with iinet as my ISP and I am generally happy with their service.

But today they have huge problems with their network and limited connectivities to certain websites. These include every single one of my broker and CFD providers :banghead:.

Therefore I am posting on ASF while I should be super busy with the market open. This leads me to think that I have no contingency backup ISP... except setting up my laptop in a public library that's 25 minutes away.

Anyone care to share their contingency backup plan?

Pay by the hour dial up from a different ISP? Slow as, but would assure you a back-up connection

I've got wireless broadband as backup, which is quite adequate (unless you are a high frequency trader).

If you've got 3G reception in your area from 3mobile you can get a prepaid SIM with 12GB that doesn't expire for 12 months for $149

Then get youself one of the fancy Billion or Draytek routers that have a USB port for plugging in the 3G modem and you have automatic failover.

That is a good idea. Thanks Azza :)

Things got restored at ~10:30. Quite a lot of damage thanks to the fall in the market.

G'Day,

To back up my cable i have a D-Link 3G router with a 3 wireless card plugged in, if that also fails i keep a Telstra USB stick in the bottom drawer, if the cable and towers pack up i also have dial up.

I've never used the last two in anger.

Hi Azza, others, sorry, but to clarify, are you/can you use a 3g mobile phone with associated device as back up?

As back-up, I presently have Telstra Bigpond wireless, $20 per month, but rarely use it, has limited download as well.

Was going to change to Vodafone $99 + $20 per month for 2 Gig/month, which accumulates, but yr deal sounds worth considering.

Here's the deal. $248 including USB modem and 12GB with 1 year expiry. Check your coverage zones though as roaming charges (i.e. outside Three's coverage area) are quite expensive.

I use Telstra because I'm too lazy to move but when they go down I can still access email on my IPhone, you just need an account with Telstra, quite cheap for 150mb per month and fine for email and checking the stock market.

I struggle to go through a trading day on 3 x 19inch screens...

So the iphone is probably too small for my requirement :).

They should have plug in docks for iphone / ipods that is also a larger screen. Remember you read about it here first!

Iinet broadband users can use a dialup account as backup but I'm not sure if that will help if the underlying problem is with their network.

same here - and if you need to go out somewhere you can take the laptop along and still connect from wherever so its pretty handy. If its really just for emergency backup then a pre-paid broadband card sounds like the go.

i have an optus wireless usb for backup/wen im capped. Its prepaid,40bux gets u 2gigs. Its only for emergencys. Heres a good plan: $70 per month and u get a laptop + 5gb wireless internet on 24months! Awesome deal!

Hi awg,

You can use your mobile if it's in this list for the Draytek

Not sure about the Billion.
