Scaning Software - suggestions? recommendations?

Hi All

I think its high time i tried my hand at scanning, I am aware of afew free web based services, are there any free downladable applications out there that people use, would recommend?

I guess for the immediate future I am looking for a free service, until I know a little bit more or get some practise at scanning.

What is it you feel needs to be conditions for a scan to throw up a candidate?
