I confess to not knowing a lot about the whole Saddam scenario, but my "gut feeling" is, that in this case (and in most cases) that we, the average punters on the street, are kept in the dark regarding the real motives behind many "political arrangements" Saddams hanging Imo opinion was more politically orientated (for what ever reasons) than we are let know , all done under the pretence of "social responsibility" .............. The pollies were covering their backsides as they always do ........... I used to be nieve .... now I'm just realistic ............ Cheers, Barney.

strange no such efforts for US embassies in oil depleted countries.
presumably there will be a lot of american tourists (in boardshorts) visiting war-torn Iraq in 2007. = and/or oil magnates .
Aus also has embassy there - serious security precautions.

The US President and the Iraqi Prime Minister have agreed during a phone call that an investigation into the handling of Saddam Hussein's execution is the "right thing to do".

US President George W Bush and Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki spoke for almost two hours on Thursday (local time).

White House spokesman Tony Snow says the US President backs a decision to investigate the uproar at Saddam's hanging.

"He expressed that it was the right thing to do to, investigate the taping and the behaviour at the execution of Saddam Hussein," Mr Snow said.

The images, which show observers yelling "go to hell" and chanting the name of a radical Shiite cleric before Saddam falls through the trap, have sparked angry demonstrations by Saddam's fellow Sunnis - fearful of Shiite ascendancy.

Moderate Sunnis say it deals a blow to Mr Maliki's call for reconciliation. etc etc

Meanwhile, american ad for phones (yuk! - you have to worry - and we are following these eggheads) I think i'd prefer "3" after the excellent cricket sponsorship.

Rome has lit up the Colosseum as part of an Italian campaign for a worldwide moratorium on the death penalty, launched after the execution of Saddam Hussein in Iraq.
For the past seven years the Roman arena, once the site of bloody gladiatorial battles, has been lit whenever a death sentence was commuted anywhere in the world.

Strange that the Colosseum should be a beacon for playing down violence.
