What are peoples favourite reds in the $15 - $30 range and what regions?
also what have been the best years for reds so far in the 2000"s

couple of my favs are Thomas hyland shiraz - 2002 :)
penfolds bin 128 coonawarra - 2000 :)

barossa better than coonawarra?

I love Margaret River Reds from WA. Mostly all of them! They are just so nice. The boutique vineyards seem to produce the best. Fifth Leg is reasonably priced. Met the fellow who owns Hayshed Hill - he has some nice ones too.

Banrock Station.

Riverland is a great climate for grape growing, very Mediterrainean, which brings out the flavour in the grapes

Apoligies Tech A forgot bout little o'l Mclaren. Isnt Wirra wirra down there? I quite like the "church block" was that the one where the wine storage accident was a month ago? 2km is a short stagger distance - from the cellardoor and wine tastings - half ya luck!!!:)

Can't go past many of the Leeuwin Estate or Vasse Felix wines (wrong state again ;) )

...and with their sustainable wetlands and excellent conservation efforts even better:)

Its a shame that the Riverland hasn't done more to market itself as a premier wine region imo.

Most of the grapes harvested in the riverland are trucked to the Barossa and then made into wine there. So a huge amount of your Barossa wines actually originated in the Riverland. So the whole 'Barossa' thing is just marketing rather than actual quality

My father is a grape grower, so I know the workings of the industry...

Coriole (McLaren Vale) Shiraz and Sangiovese

Skillogalee (Clare Valley) anything red, they're all good

Wirra Wirra (McLaren Vale) Sparrow's Lodge and Church Block Estate are the better ones.

d'Arenberg (McLaren Vale) used to have a nice little cellar door, now too commercial :( Old Vine Shiraz, or anything red.

Woodstock (McLaren Vale) good, but a little pricey for what you get.

I guess I am a McLaren fan? Although, being in WA I do support many of my local wineries.... top local drops

wabbit :D

OK now for some real spam.

When in SA and visiting the Wine region give me a call and we will do a good deal on accomodation.
2 Esplanade apartments.F/F Spa you know the drift.
Private mail me for a brouchure.
Had quite a few traders stay with us over the years.
Well not exactly "with" us.

I think you will see a huge turn around in SA wines, particularly from the Barossa. Where they were once the big mass produced companies that bought grapes from all over (and yes that still does go on), but now you see so many small boutique wineries opened up throughout the Barossa. Tununda over the last few years has turned into a real tourist destination rather than a working town. I think we will now see much better wines out of this region.

I disagree that the Barossa is just marketing, the region for as long as I can remember has been full of grape vines, just that the production of the large companies could not keep up with local supply. Now it’s going through a regeneration, the local towns are growing rapidly, new vineyards are being established and there is a whole new buzz to the area.

Like many already stated, my preferences are for WA reds, but my all time favourite red is a Yerring Station Shiraz from the Yarra Valley in Vic. So smooth, it’s to die for.

Off Topic Slightly Rustyheela, sorry but it may be of use to everyone.

I was on a hoiliday in NZ a couple of years and I ran into a bloke who said "Bill you got to get on a site called www.graysonline.com.au"

I have never looked back since, it is an online public auction where you can buy wine by the case and get it delivered to your door. I've picked up some really good wines for $30 a case delivered. You will be surprsied what they got there sometimes, check it out.

I am no way affiliated with them, just want fellow ASF members to know of a good deal, cheers..... Yes I'm on it now..:alcohol:

My "go-to" wines are Coriole, Grant Burge and Balnaves, pretty much anything from them is going to be excellent.

Others of note include Bethany (reds), Charles Melton (pinot), Glaetzer (shiraz), Pirramimma (heavy reds & whites) and Wynns.

Castillo de Diablo Cab Sav from Chile is pretty good value for about 20 Soles, or 7 bucks.

S.A. is South America right?

:)

Gemtree Tempranillo - better than the uncut shiraz but nothing much to compare this style to, all the 2004 shiraz' were exceptional in McLaren Vale but 99% are sold out.

White- Coriole Chenin Blanc (exceptional)
