Queensland politics

I think I also agreed with you about the spread of Islam and the craziness of religion so maybe we aren't all that different after all.

But , on the other hand...

:D

And here I believed we were poles apart....or is it polls?

Just goes to show, ya can't be right all the time. :D

Queensland needs an upper house like other states to be a watch dog......I think we had one until 1929 but I am not sure why it was abandoned.

I believe the upper house could be made up of Council mayors.......there are enough of them......but it would add to admin costs.

The problem we are over governed now......

IMHO, I believe we should do away with state Governments altogether.

NSW has an upper house and didn't seem to help them much when it comes to stopping corruption. You need an ICAC and not the hobbled CMC.

Supreme Court Judges are supposed to be on a pinacle in their ivory towers handing out justice to plebs with whom they have no rapport. Knowledge of the lifestyles of the common might impair their judgment. How dare Premier Newman appoint Tim Carmody, a common man, to be Chief Justice and not even consult the legal fraternity on it. They are horrified and are rubbishing Carmody, led by the vocal Tony Fitzgerald.

He said "Unfortunately, if its totally unsuitable choice is sworn in as Chief Justice, the damage to the courts and the independence of the judiciary will be irreversible." What he means is the choice is unsuitable to him and the close-knit legal fraternity. They lose - the working class win. By all accounts he is a nice bloke with the wrong background.

Whatever Mr Carmody is accused of during his tenure, it won’t be elitism or failing to grasp the reality of working class life.

He originated light years away from the privileged background of many senior jurists. Born in 1956 in Millmerran, he was still a boy when the family moved to Inala in 1963, taking up residence in a Housing Commission home.

His father was a publican, bookmaker and sometimes boarding house contractor at the Katherine Meatworks.

“He was a wonderful bloke but when you are a publican … and a bookie … there are going to be problems.’’

Carmody attended several schools including Nudgee College, where he interrupted his education after Year 9 to work at the Katherine Meatworks, mostly sweeping up the remains of dead livestock.

That experience put him on the road to an extraordinarily successful legal career which has included adjunct professor of law at QUT, Counsel Assisting at the Fitzgerald inquiry, Junior Counsel in the Connolly-Ryan inquiry, Queensland Crime Commissioner and Family Court judge in between.

The swearing in of such an appointee is usually a very public affair. The Newman government were so afraid the legal establishment would fail to attend that they have carried out this swearing in privately.
The whole matter has been poorly handled by all sides imo.

He was found by an appeals court to have cut and pasted part of a judgement (naturally his decision was overturned). A mediocre intellect for a mediocre state.

Looks like Labor have won the election.
Like in New Zealand, managing the covid spread appears to help the incumbent win votes.

Even news corp are calling a Labor win not surprising really Palaszczuk has played the COVID pretty much to script.

There are complaints, of course, but whether by luck or by design, we've been pretty okay here, especially for us in "essential" businesses, state debt seems to be a concern however.

The woman in Charge of the disastrous Dtrainwreck that was the Queensland DNA lab, is till employed by the QLD health dept, depite the damning report into her management (or lack thereof).
From Evil Murdoch press
The scientist at the centre of Queensland’s DNA laboratory fiasco remains employed by the health department five months after a damning report found she oversaw disturbing practices that compromised thousands of criminal cases.
A royal commission-style inquiry in December found managing scientist Cathie Allen and her deputies, Justin Howes and Paula Brisotto, were behind a testing threshold that meant thousands of crime scene samples were ignored for years.

Ms Allen was stood down in September as the inquiry probed catastrophic forensic failings, first exposed in The Australian’s podcast series, Shandee’s Story.
After the final report was handed down on December 13, the lab managers were given three weeks to respond to show-cause notices.

Sources told The Australian Mr Howes and Ms Brisotto left Queensland Health in recent weeks, but Ms Allen was still employed, suspended without pay.

Health Minister Yvette D’Ath said she had been advised by her department not to “go into the circumstances surrounding their release … but I can confirm they are no longer employees of forensic services”.
In the usual sloth like speed of a government department, the nprocedural problems at the scientific lab and the outdated testing faclities have yet to be be adressed.
The lab, now overseen by Linzi Wilson-Wilde, is retrospectively reviewing thousands of sexual assault cases dating back to 2008 “to determine which should be subject to retesting or re-analysis”.

Deputy Chief Magistrate Anthony Gett this week told a court there were already“10,000 cases in backlog for DNA testing”.

Ms D’Ath said the backlog related to “business-as-usual cases”, not historic samples being re-examined after the inquiry.

“We do have a backlog in relation to just the normal evidence that comes to the doors of forensic services every week,” she said.

“That is due to a range of reasons, including a shortage of the scientists, but also because we did lose staff through the commission of inquiry, and we have to rebuild our processes. We also had to reset how we test.”

So the last of the bosses in charge of both state and federal politics during the COVID era.
Queensland Premier Palaszczuk has announced her retirement.
After months of speculation, gentle reminders from the Unions, and falling poll numbers, she has fallen or been pushed on her sword.

After nine years in power, the Labor premier made the announcement at a press conference on Sunday in the face of successive polls showing her personal popularity has fallen among voters and her third-term government facing defeat.

Her resignation comes after months of escalating leadership speculation from within her own party.

But just last month, Ms Palaszczuk insisted she would fight the state election on October 31 next year.

Ms Palaszczuk said she began considering retirement during a two-week holiday in Italy in September.
“Finally last week, my mind was made up at national cabinet,” she said.
“I was sitting there thinking, this is the fourth prime minister, there were all these new faces sitting around the cabinet table.
“We got a great deal for Queensland, $4bn, and I thought to myself, renewal is a good thing.”
MS Palaszczuk will serve out the week as Premier before Labor chooses a new leader.
Ms Palaszczuk held back tears as she thanked the people of Queensland for electing her in 2015, 2017 and 2020.
“When I lead this party from an opposition of just seven members I said that the first election would be like climbing Mount Everest – I went on to climb that mountain twice more and I don’t need to do it again,” she said
“I have given it my all and I have run a marathon.
“I have fought the good fight and have given everything but now is the time for me to find out what else life has to offer.”
She has anointed her deputy who is from the same faction, as her successor.
I is unlikely anyone else will be game to stand against him, they will all b lining up for the deputies job.

And we now have a Queensland premier Miles who is another son of the WEF:
a 2007 graduate of Al Gore brainwashing university.
These leaders Trudeau, Macron , etc are all selected, pushed by the WEF in position of power across the world
In our case, Miles propably did not pass the minimum IQ to join the young leader nurturing school and just got the lower degree😂
Was Miles allowed to scratch the head of the naked cat on the lap of the evil bald Master..or was he the cat😂
Seriously, I invite southerners of YouTube a few of his speeches from the past and see how regardless of your side of the political board, you can pity Qld now...

Judging by yesterdays super byelection day results, you probably won't have to worry about your dislike of Miles
From Evil Murdoch Press.

Labor is on the brink of losing the heartland state seat of Ipswich West after a brutal swing against Steven Miles’s ALP, but will hold Annastacia Palaszczuk’s old seat of Inala despite a voter backlash, after a Super Saturday of elections.
Insider ALP analysis provided to The Australian predicts a final two-party-preferred vote in Ipswich West, on Brisbane’s outskirts, of 53 per cent to the LNP’s Darren Zanow and 47 per cent to Labor’s Wendy Bourne, a swing against Labor of 17.4 per cent.

The Legalise Cannabis Party secured a large protest vote of about 15 per cent primary, but despite Labor’s strategy of recruiting ALP supporters to hand out how-to-vote cards for the pro-weed party, an estimated 40 per cent of preferences flowed to the LNP.
There were also local government elections statewide.
The LNP have retained control of Brisbane City Council, with varying results in other cities.
The Greens made some gains, but not as much as they had hoped.
In perhsps a harbinger of things to come, the Labour member who has held the Mayoral position in Townsville, looks like losing her job to an ex One Nation candidate.
Lotsa funny things happen in Queensland.

In one of those rats deserting a sinking ship moments, Qld Premier Miles has another long serving member take the leap.
Julienne Gilbert is one of four Labor MPs retiring at the election, alongside, Attorney-General Yvette D'Ath , Srirling Hinchcliffe and Barry O'Rourke
QLD has already lost former premier Annastacia Palaszczuk and Jim maddern who both quit parliament last year.

From Evil Murdoch press
Labor’s long-serving Mackay MP Julieanne Gilbert has announced she will retire from politics to allow for “renewal”, but insists Premier Steven Miles can still win October’s state election.
There had been persistent rumours Ms Gilbert, who has represented the sugar and mining town since 2015, was planning to quit at the election but she said she had made the decision “recently” after discussions with her husband.

“ I am 62 this year and each term now is four years, the used to be a little over two years, so you need to be committed for the next four years,” she told The Australian.

“I feel as though it is time for a bit of renewal and refreshment and for a younger person to take over the reins.

“Mackay is a wonderful place with so much going for it so I would like to see somebody who is able to commit for the long-term.”

Her announcement comes a week after YouGov polling revealed Labor was on track for a bruising defeat at the October 26 election with the Liberal National Party extending its lead on a statewide two-party-preferred basis of 57-43 per cent.

Confirming her plans to retire to The Australian, Ms Gilbert said she believed Mr Miles could deliver a fourth-term for the Labor government.

“I believe he will get across the line,” she said.

“Out doorknocking and on the phones, the conversations I am having do not reflect anything that is coming through in the media polls.”

Her Old Guard faction is now jostling to find a replacement candidate for the seat – held on a 8.3 per cent margin – with Labor sources saying Mackay Deputy Mayor Belinda Hassan is the frontrunner.

Under Labor’s affirmative action rules, Ms Gilbert must be replaced by a woman.

Queensland Politics are starting to rival those of Victoria for their eye opening moments.
Steve Andrews, only Queensland Pauline Hanson One Nation MP in the State Parliament has defected to the Bob Katter group.
This means that in the upcoming state election, the Katter group will have four MP's running.
The greens, who get perhaps a little more publicity, have only two.
If Andrews manages to get re-elected along with the other 3, their group is going to have some significant sway in the event that the unicameral house has a hung parliament.
Could be interesting after October.

I'm not really sure which thread to put this in but apparently there have been boom Gates installed at the New South Wales/Queensland border.

Ominous?

Is it to stop NSW folk getting in or stopping Queenslanders from getting out??
