Problem with accessing ASF

Hey Julia,

I normally use Maxthon, it's based on the IE engine and no problems. I just tried on IE7 and that works fine as well. IE6 is getting long in the tooth, I would suggest doing a Windows update on you IE to get the latest version - my guess is that your probelsm will disappear.

But, Roland, I am having absolutely no problem with any other site, only ASF.
So can't see that the blame falls on IE6 really.

Yes, hard to explain. PHP and HTML scripting is continually being updated to incorporate new user experiences. If the script changes (even in minor ways) and the browser is not updated to render the changes, then depending on what changes have been made - some wierd results could be experienced.

The Linux world (normally using PHP) tend to be much faster in their progress than the heavy weights like Apple or Microsoft - so to gain the best expiences all around, we really are locked into a world of continual updates.

Julia, even a Windows update, or an IE6 patch that you may or may not even noticed downloading could have an effect. Your unique browser plugins could have an effect.

If ASF works in other browsers for you, then it would be hard not to point the finger at your IE. Worth a try to update your Windows browser ... you will alos benefit from the added enhancements and security fixes that Microsoft work hard to incorporate.

I'm running Windows XP Pro SP2 and IE 7 and a comprehensive antiviris and antispyware kit. As I am still using a relatively small CPU, I run diskeeper in the background when idle and do a manual scan regularly after Registry Mechanic to keep my files defragmented and in order, to maximise my CPU speed.

Interestingly, I had a complete loss of internet a few weeks ago. I contacted Bigpond, they said they were having problems... thought it was from some electrical storms.

They got me to shut down and switch off my modem then turn it all on again, and it worked.

Occassionally since then I couldn't get internet again, so I shut down, switched modem off, then turned it all on again and it went fine.

But I still have the same problems Julia referred to connecting to ASF (and a couple of other sites that tend to take a bit longer to load) ocassionally. Usually I connect to another site and come back to ASF and it works fine.

From what other people are saying I'm wondering whether it might be primiarly an IE weakness, but could IE's weakness be exassapitated by Joe's particular server programs or capacity?

Still having the same problem today. Still no problems with IE on any other site.

I have removed the link to Paypal in the site footer. Can those who have been experiencing difficulties let me know if this is making a difference?

Thanks!

Still got probelms here too. As suggested I have:

  1. Updated IE (still version 6, just a security update)
  2. Ran a complete virus scan - clean
  3. Ran a complete scan with Spybot - clean

Cheers

I'm working fine at the moment. As I said earlier only had problem occassionally, but not sure that mine was related to paypal. Didn't look that closely.

Try resetting IE from your browser.
Tools > Internet Options > Advanced Tab and hit the Reset button.
It brings the default setting back which worked for me .. possibly a bug which changed some advanced settings.

Spooly, when you say the "Reset Button" do you mean the box which says "Restore Defaults". Following your above directions I can't see any Reset Button.

Joe, I've had no problem getting on via IE this evening. But, as I've said, the difficulty has been intermittent. Rarely a difficulty in the evening, but almost always in the mornings, but then again it happened yesterday afternoon when presumably there would be fewer than normal people accessing ASF.

Hey Joe,

The site seems to be zooming along for me today, so far.

cheers

Yep, I use IE7 though Julia so slightly different.

It basically restores IE back to when it was first installed ... i think you`ll lose all cookies and temp internet files but all favouries are kept.
I have a laptop running IE6 which had the same prob but it is fine for ASF today but on my main PC I couldn`t access this site at all, but after IE was reset it worked straight away.

Am glad to see that things seem to be getting better for some members that were having issues.

Just wondering if anyone is still having difficulties accessing ASF or was removing the link to Paypal the solution?

Not sure what it was Joe, seemed to go great guns yesterday, still pretty good today but had a few of the same instances happen. But 150% better than it was ta mate.

Completely fine for me, thanks Joe. Not a single instance of any problem.
