Perhaps some expert here can explain the wild variations in graphed prices between capital cities (I'm especially looking at Melbourne minimum vs Sydney max - a spread of 17 cents!)?

BTW, Brisbane drivers must be starting to spit chips with the astronomical increase in the ave price over the last 3 days...

Is petrol price regulation in Oz a bit of a joke or wut?

I once did an illegal U-turn into a service station to save $1.60 on a tank of petrol.
On exiting, I was pulled over and fined for said illegal U-turn.

No such thing as cheap petrol!

No, it's not a joke since it's not regulated.

Petrol prices, along with a lot of other things, were "deregulated" in the 1980's and 90's. As such, service stations can charge whatever they like.

I really don't get this "weekly cycle" thing however. Thankfully it doesn't happen down here in Tas although fuel is far from cheap - 151.9 for regular unleaded, a bit more for diesel and I noticed that LPG has gone up a bit to 95.9 :2twocents

Wednesday is petrol day for my car. As the ACCC graphic shows, the weekly price cycle in Perth is as reliable as the rising sun.

I think it has to do with public service and social security paydays.

Looking at the graphs, I'm not sure that weekly "cycle" caused by SS paydays has any effect whatsoever on the Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Adelaide ULP markets. I can understand the regular Perth cycle - would make it easy to plan your purchases... but those others......meh!

Wow. Early on in the graph timeline (Nov 04) you can see Darwin's price is +5 cpl higher than Sydney/Melbourne. At the 2013 end of graph, it is almost +40 cpl higher!

Unfortunately for you Smurf, looks like Taswegians are headed the same way eventually...+18 cpl compared to S/M city slicker prices atm?
