Portfolio recording software

Hello Chris of Topshare, I have some questions.

I have a stock called DRT, it is a property trust. I have owned it for 7 years. During those years each dividend has had a tax deferred component which is suppose to reduce the cost base when you sell. Since owning this stock they also stapled the securities and it was reconstructed. As a result I got a new cost base per share with a higher number of shares allocated to me.

1. Can Topshare work out the cost base with all the tax deferred components over the years? (This is when I sell)

2. Can Topshare work out the cost base after the reconstruction? i.e.. I got more shares at a lower cost base.

3. The reason I ask is that when the stock was purchased at $1.50 say and you get a tax deferred component of 3c at a dividend surely there must be allowances made for the reconstruction where the reconstructed share price is lower.

4. Is your product a one off fee or do you have to pay extra for "New Versions" every couple of years or so?

It is going to be a financial nightmare for me to work this all out when I sell this stock DRT, that is why I ask and I am looking to buy a product that can handle Listed Property Trusts. Thank You.

Roland,
I'm not familiar with Personal Stock Monitor. But from a quick look at the website, it's clearly US-centric so you wouldn't get the same Aus-based tax point of view that Topshare gives you.

Wysywig,
Thanks for your feedback! The website hasn't changed much for 3 years or so, and you're right that it needs a refresh. I'm intending to put some time into doing this over the next 6 months or so.

Bill,
Yes, Topshare handles this situation properly. Trust distributions are entered through Other Income. Any Tax Deferred amounts will reduce the Cost Base automatically.

For the DRT reconstruction, Topshare has a general feature that's used for things like takeovers, mergers, demergers etc. It lets you define the number of shares received, and the cost base and the effective date of acquisition for CGT calculations. In its most common use, there are a number of stocks involved in the change (eg, Coles and Wesfarmers) but it is also often useful when there's a change in both share numbers and cost base for a single stock as in your case with DRT.

Maintenance releases are free. These come out fairly frequently, say every month or two. They're downloaded and installed automatically. Major updates are released about every 1.5 to 3 years. From now on, they will be charged at half the cost of a new license (unless you first bought less than a year prior, in which case they're free).

HTH,
Chris.

Thanks Chris, it sounds like exactly what I am looking for. I will download the trial and try it out. I did sell DRT so it will be interesting how it all works out when I enter the data. Thanks again.:xyxthumbs

I use My Portfolio Frontier from solosw.com. It is a once off cost and I have been very happy with my purchase.

We are now a few years on. Has anyone got any further thoughts on Portfolio Management? Thanks for you time bux
