Portfolio recording software

I use an Excel spreadsheet to manage my portfolios.

If you know your way around Excel and Visual Basic programming (which Excel uses) then there is virtually nothing that any 3rd party portfolio manager software can do that you cannot set up in Excel.

Personally I prefer the freedom to fully customise my own portfolio managers using Excel.

cheers :)

I use Manage Invest.

It includes a data feed and currency conversions so tracking international investments is also nice and simple.

For those with property investments, it also contains tenant management and depreciation.

I do not think that any of those two things can be done with Excel...

It also seems to handle deferred tax properly (reduced cost base for the investments which earned that income), which is unlike most similar software packages i have tried.

Hope that helps.

I use http://www.topshare.com.au/ Topshare I found to be the best one, after downloading the trial versions of 2 or 3 other products. For my needs (basic portfolio management and taxation only) it was much better than the others. Happily, it was also the cheapest, only $149 for a lifetime license. The developer is also happy to add in features if people request them I requested the ability to do a tax report for any period, not only a year or a quarter, and he put it in for me. It can handle everything I've needed to do, such as dividends, splits/reconstructions, code changes etc. I'm sure if there was something that was needed, but not included, he would build it in. Highly recommended. Another benefit is that it's quite simple to use- I've hardly every had to read the help, unlike the other products I tried.

It isnt a freebie, but I use portfolio planner which updates using yahoo prices. It produces a large number of reports (eg growth, CGT, benchmarks) as well as a number of options for dividends, special dividends, buy outs etc. You get a trial version through solosw.com

You pay a once off licence fee for three entities with unlimited updates. It uses access as its data base.

I use Topshare too! Great program.
You only pay once and its not much. Fantastic at tax times, you just print it out and hand it to your accountant.
Check it out.

I'm going to give it a go, downloading trial version now, I have Paritech's Portfolio Manager but its not very user friendly.

I use Stator.

Pretty damned neat.
I'll second this. I, too, use Stator (the Pro version which handles CFDs, FX, and Futures as well as straight shares).

It's an absolutely fantastic program for keeping track of your trading - for anyone who's the least bit professional about trading it's a godsend for keeping exact track of your money and risk management. It also spits out exactly what you need for tax time (hold time/tax liability).

Support is excellent - the few issues/questions I've had about the program have been quickly answered via email.

The icing on the cake, though, is the instant closed equity curve generation.

The only two negatives I can see are;
1. It's annoying when you update the program to have to re-enter the registration code.
2. Initial setup is a bit confusing due to its ability to handle multiple trading and bank accounts - once that's all set up correctly, it's a breeze to drive from there on.

Hi

I'm still trying to decide between "Topshare" and "Stator". At the moment, I just don't have the background knowledge to choose between the two. Any help would be appreciated.

Well you can (or could when I bought it!) download a trial version of topshare and try entering a few trades and play about with the tax report, or enter a difficult trade such as a split/consolidation etc to see how it handles that. Still reckon it:s great, after doing 4 years worth of tax with it.

Hi, is there a way to import all trades from a broker trading platform to the Topshare Portfolio Manager? If CSV format is not available.

It would be handy if it was possible to transfer the week/month trades over from broker to a portfolio manager in one click.

I imported my data from CSV files, but it was a bit of a hassle getting it in the format that Topshare wanted. But there were 800 trades, so I persisted with it. It's easier to keep on top of things and enter it all at the end of each day by hand I think. Why would CSV format not be available? Presumably some kind of text file export will be available and it's not a massive job with excel to export as CSV ("Save As" and choose CSV, after you have the column format you need).

I have this free software called Hubb Investor.

I heard of it in a magazine I read, it's quite good. Has charting and quotes and you can set it up to use pretty much every type of indicy. For free, it's very good value.

Hi all,

I'm the developer of Topshare, and came across this thread from a scan of my website hits. I'm happy to answer any questions. Just a quick response to a few issues that have come up so far:

1. Yes, you can import via CSV files, but you need to massage the data into Topshare's format first. It's probably fair to say that you need a bit of data manipulation experience to be able to do this. I'm happy to help - just contact me through the Topshare website. I'd see this as useful when you're first setting up your portfolio with historical trades, but once you're up to date you'd be better off entering trades as you go, not doing (say) a weekly import. Entering one trade only takes 30 seconds or so.

2. Tax-related record-keeping and reporting is probably the most important function, so capital gains reporting is very comprehensive. Topshare works out for you which CGT rule applies, according to when the stock was bought and sold. It even applies CPI indexation or no-cgt if the buy/sell dates are appropriate, although not many would still hold stocks where these situations apply.

Any questions, please post away!

Cheers,
Chris.

Hey Chris, How does TopShare compare with Personal Stock Monitor Gold :http://www.personalstockmonitor.com ?

I couldn't find any screen shots on the TopShare website

I've been using PSM for around 3 years now and it just keeps getting better, not free, but good value

Some thoughts which may attract more customers :-

1) the home page could do with some spunk (colours, arrangement, screenshots? and use of the full screen width)

2)the lady on the home page looks very concerned about something she sees (probably the old fellas trading losses :p:)

3)maybe a whole new web design with creativity and clout

:- functionality is good with any teething problems solved easily/friendly

:)
