Hi all,

This is my first post - I am not in the market yet, but I am currently getting myself educated so I am ready to invest. I am uncovering topic after topic ( seems to be a never ending road!), and from the research I have conducted so far it seems like you really have to know what you are doing to survive. It looks tough but rewarding, like anything in life I think.

Lately I have been studying money management, things like the 2% rule, position sizing, portfolio weighting etc. From my research it appears necessary to have some sort of trade tracking/recording system that can aid in good money management. I have read of some people using a fairly simple excel spreadsheet, but then I came across reliksoftware.com. Has anyone used this, and if so, what are your thoughts on it?

If you intend to trade are you purchasing charting software?
Most of these has a Portfolio Manager which give you reports.
Such as ... Capital Gains, Investment transactions, Stock holding report, Trade details, Trade listings, Trade summary etc.

Just a thought!

If you have an iPad I've been playing around with some decent apps (pretty basic but really good if you want to check on your shares throughout the day or for a quick overview of your position) ones I like are stockwatch and bloomberg.

If you're new to trading, get software that finds you stocks to buy, the right time and price to buy and sell. Most trading packages come with pretty good portfolio management; otherwise check out stator, the company that sponsors our stock tipping comp. But starting with management software before you have anything to manage is really putting the cart before the horse

I used Portfolio Manager for a while and liked it overall and actually almost coughed up the 30 bucks to buy...didn't in the end because it was difficult to use the partial parcel selling feature and there's very limited performance analysis tools, also no charting at all....however for what it is, its a great starting point, easy to use and for very basic portfolio management.

I ended up buying Stator and still cant make it work properly, cant get any historical charting to work...for $300 bucks how the hell hard would it be to simply include access to some historic data so at least buyers can see how it should work and then figure it out for themselves. :dunno:

Thanks So_Cynical and to the others who replied. I plan to use Meta Stock for charting, but if Meta Stock can't do what Portfolio Manager can do then I'll get both. I need to have visibility of my portfolio status as a whole, not just the info re: individual trades. Cheers.

I used Stator for many years. The downside for me was manual data entry and (later) no real ability to handle international shares in the standard version - no trial available for the multi currency version at that time anyway. Nevertheless it suited me quite well for many years. I have since transferred to Fund Manager which suits my current needs better.

I also had Metastock for a long time. Last update I had was version 7. I have since bought Amibroker a few years ago which better meets my needs.

I tend to agree with a previous post though that if just getting started a portfolio manger is probably not urgent yet.

On the site Smart Trading, there is a Smart Trader spreadsheet V8 that has every "bell and whistle" that you can think of. $297
The site owner could not find one that did what she wanted, so compiled her own.

Well why would I be suprised. She's a female and they think out of the square.

Thanks Joea, I checked out the smart trader spreadsheet and it looks excellent. It's now that I wish I were an excel whip, I could save myself 300 bucks! I'll most likely buy it in the near future, even for nothing but the position calculator and summary page. As long as I can customize it to my trading system (which I don't have yet), it looks the goods. Being excel - this allows for customization unlike some other software. Like you said it's 300 bucks, but like my mates dad used to say, "if you buy crap, you'll get crap". To me this was always funny because it is so obvious, pretty self explanatory!!

Coincidentally I've been looking at some information from David Jenyns, who has also mentioned Justine Pollards website as an information source for traders. I have found his website to be helpful.
