But along with some other posters on the Biden thread, they do highlight there are extremists among us.
If we listened to Bas, we would all be sitting in the dark by now, because the coal would have been shut down three years ago when the last Government was the only reason it was running.
But he's great to keep things alive and bubbling along, communities need characters and some threads would be lost without input.

On a personal note @basilio , robodebt hit my daughter up for $6k in 2017, for single parent pension overpayment that she received from 2010 to 2015.
The issue was she is badly disabled and deaf, she was living independently and we helped her have IVF, when she gave birth to the first child in 2010 she went into CES to find out what to do, she walked away thinking she had knew what to do, but being deaf in 2010 she only new bits.
So we move on, she has 70% full thickness burns, she is completely deaf, she was working full time and paying private HBF, they in their infinite wisdom said robo debt with data matching found that she hadn't reported all here payslips after her son was born.

So being someone that doesn't want to be a burden on society she forwards all her payslips for the years they requested, because she thought they had said that it would be worked out from her group certificates at tax time, unbeknown to her that was the family tax benefit requirement and one department didn't talk to the other.

So when the ATO hit her up, I said hang on this kid could be on disability but she isn't and has worked and paid her way and you guys didn't think to check that she actually understood the information, when she was deaf and hadn't reported.
Not only that, but being deaf and a working single mother how could she report her wages, when deaf people in 2010 couldn't use a phone, it was before sms time sand before my gov portals, she was told tough $hit you owe the money, I paid it and actually being the person she is, she paid us back.
I said to her her this is crap I want to sort it, she said Dad I was paid the money, I wasn't due the money, it was my mistake.
She actually makes me a better person, I would have been locked up many times for bashing people but for for her, my wife says she is like oil on troubled waters.
Might sound a bit soppy, but if you knew me you wouldn't think so.
So I guess what I'm saying is for all Labors inclusiveness, they didn't give a $hit that a deaf disabled working single mother comes into centerlink in 2010 and they couldn't be fckd to be bothered to give her the correct information, or take into consideration that she wouldn't be able to report even if she knew she had to, but the computer is in the wrong 5 years later for picking it up. Really

The personal trauma your family faced with Centrelink was xhite. I can respect you and your daughters and your families determination to assist her and for her to take responsibility for her life. A very tough road to hoe but as you pointed out in many ways the whole saga has had some unforeseen benefits in terms of the impact it has had on you.

I disagree with your kicking of the Labour government in 2010 as being responsible for the poor advice and probable maladministration by Centrelink. Frankly that is a Centrelink snafu which unfortunately happens all too often. On that point it may well have been possible to take your case to your local member of Parliament and ask them to check it out. That is what they are there for and from personal experience I can say that a pointed inquiry by a local MHR with a serious anomaly like your daughters puts a rocket up Centrelink. Things happen.

Having said that it is just wrong to equate "normal" unfair stuff ups by Centrelink with the Robo debt disaster. This was a completely stuffed Government direction to Centrelink to raise billions of dollars in so called overpayments. From the first day people recognised the mistake of attempting to use nominal end of year earnings to then recalculate fortnightly payments. It just doesn't work that way. One can work for say 3-4 months which reduces centrelink payments for that period of time. But when that employment ceases the person is then eligible for Centrelink payments in full. Attempting to claw back these monies because the person worked previously is not allowed in the Act.

When Centrelink sent hundreds of thousands of computer generated debt notices without any human oversight they destroyed themselves as well as the centrelink clients. The Royal Commission went to great lengths to examine how this happened, who was responsible and the effects on the citizens who were given a payment demand for an imaginary debt.

Really SP ? I would have hoped for better from you.

I have always driven the need to move as quickly as possible to a renewable energy society. But having said that I have also been very vocal about making sure this happens on the ground and works. I have deep respect and fair bit of understanding about the technical, financial and administrative challenges our society faces getting from coal to renewable. And I agree that allowing the energy system to collapse is a disastrous scenario which must be avoided. So there is ton of work to be done making sure this changeover works.

What concerns me is the pace of the transition.

Phasing out coal and gas too fast puts too much pressure on the replacements to fill the gap.

We need a more orderly transition, and always bagging fossil fuels and driving them out of business early will lead to tears imo.

Wrong thread probably, but it's hard to distinguish between satire and reality sometimes.

Abbott Nominated to Fox News Board To Provide Left-Wing Balance​

Saying he wanted to bring a more progressive perspective to the network, Lachlan Murdoch has appointed Tony Abbott to the Fox News board, with the former PM’s views on same-sex marriage, abortion and race relations likely to ruffle a few feathers amongst Fox viewers.

“A lot of our viewers think that someone who has an abortion should be executed, whereas Tony only thinks they should go to Hell. So he really will give people a more compassionate, nuanced view. I’m looking forward to the contest of ideas,” Murdoch said.

He said Abbott’s perspective would be useful on a lot of different topic areas. “When we cover say, the morality of same sex marriage, we only look at it from one angle – the American angle. But I want to consider other opinions. Like, what’s the Australian view on why same sex marriage is evil? That’s the kind of breadth of opinion we’re after”.

While this is the first time he has served on the board, Abbott has been working for News Corp since the early 1990s.

On the other hand Lachlan Murdoch may have decided that his old man was just too woke for 2023. This is his chance to put a serious Right Wing view on Fox.
