Pings

Not really, this can be common with some smaller ISPs, they buy cheap bandwidth that may mean sub-optimal routing paths. Many years ago I knew of one that did Sydney - Melbourne via the USA because it was cheaper!

You're right, odd was the wrong word...pathetic is more appropriate. What people will do for a dollar, eh?!?

I'm a little worried that your default route didn't give you a response (the first line in the attached list). I'm wondering if you've got some issues with your local network settings, in particular the netmask?

Okay, this I don't understand.

I followed the manual to install the modem etc.

How do I check my netmask?

Not really, sorting out a complex EBGP configuration with multiple peers all running their own optimisations and selectively ignoring yours can be as difficult as trying to predict the stock market! :eek:

Clowboy,

ADSL churn should not incur a reconnection fee like that. You should also shop around for deals as sometimes an ISP will waive the churn fee if they're trying to drum up business. This all said it might be an opportunity to move to ADSL2, if it's supported in your area.

Most providers are shifting to ADSL2 because it's faster, they can provide it cheaper and they get to use their own infrastructure (as opposed to wholesaling of Telstra).

Try this link, you can put in your requirements inc. total monthly cost, and it will present you with the data:

Am not sure what your network configuration is; however, start with:

open a command prompt and type "ipconfig /all", your interface IP, the mask and default route should be listed.

Edit: Can't post an example for you, 'cos I'm using a Mac and a hardware firewall to do my broadband.

You're suggesting that it can happen by accident, which I totally agree. BGP is a fine beast. The Syd to Melb via US was on purpose...and dastardly.

okay here is the netmask result.

Cool, now...

Open a command prompt and run your traceroute again to some external sites, try a few in australia, a few in the US, a few in japan and see if you always get the same IP on the second row of the output; in your last test it came up as 220.157.70.21, see if it's always 220.157.70.21.

Check ping times to whatever second-hop addresses come up and compare to your PC (192.168.0.2) and your router (192.168.0.1).

Check ping times again with 1400 byte packets (-s option?) to see if they're significantly different.

Yea well all the results from that search bring up fess of $200 or more to go to adsl2 (mostly becuase my current modem doesn't support it.)

As much as I would like to go to adsl2, it can't be justified for such a large cost. Even just switch to ADSL on another ISP still has at least a $50 fee for rapid churn (assuming my current provider allows it).

Even then the only big name ones that come up are Extel (dont know that much about them), 1 westnet plan and primus.

Damn, getting technical now.

Okay,

I tested thes addies
ebay.com (are these US?)
ebay.com.au
webcae.com.au
yahoo.com

I dont know any japanese ip's so couldnt do them.
they all resulted in the same ip for second hop. The second hop = avg 100ms ping.
PC = 0ms
Router = 0ms.

the -s option was invalid.

figured out the 1400 bit (i think).

Put in -t -l 1400 then the ips.

second hop = 335 avg
pc = 0
router = 0

Dear $deity that's awful. Best you be re-checking your modem settings with what your ISP told you, if they match up ok either scream at your ISP or swap to another.

FWIW, I get about the same as you but I'm on iBurst (wireless ISP) and I know it's high latency; I don't mind 'cos it's cheaper than paying TLS for a phone line and I don't do games.

Thats a clever idea...side step the whole local line rental fiasco altogether. I presume you use Skype or the mobile for all phone calls, right?

I dont remember my isp providing me with any settings.

Back when I first signed up he told me to select some such configuration (but I had a diff modem back then - same crap ping though). With this new modem, from memory I just followed the modem instructions - I may have selected the same options as before, I dont remember.

Maybee if my isp would call me back, that would help

Yeah, plus I'm renting at the moment, the place was brand new when we moved in and I didn't want to pay the connection fee. My girlfriend has been mobile phone only for a few years, so she doesn't mind either.

Mobile, I'm still on a TLS staff plan :cautious: :D :cautious: and I usually call interstate from *ahem* work.

iBurst isn't the bees knees, I'm constantly having to do "stuff" to keep it going and my ISP both sucks and blows, but it's the least hassle and easier to pick up & move if we shift house anytime soon. I'll likely buy an apartment sometime this year if a few of my stocks do well. :cool:

Well,

the saga continues.

I went on holidays and modem was working fine. Turned PC off and went away, came back and modem wont work (or rather I got no adsl conection). In Network conections the Local Area Conection has "network cable unpluged".

The first thing I done was check all cables, phone line, etc etc.

Rang up Isp and they reckon the modem has died. How the hell that has happend is beyond me. How does something not in use less than 12mnths old die? Anyway, as I can't seem to find the reciept (its under 24mnth warranty) I will have to buy another one. (might be a good chance to swap ISP's?

Neway, to the point. In the mentime I am back to dialup *sigh* Talk about slipage on trades. So I remembered this thread and thought I might run some of the tests again on dialup to see what results I got.

Pretty much every IP address and test I ran was exactly the same, within 10%.

Seems remarkably odd to me.
