Hi all

Are you entitled to receive the dividend that company is paying when you own shares in the company before the ex dividend date.

So eg if the ex dividend date was say 10th of March and you bought shares on the 10th of March before ASX close does that make you eligible for the dividend. OR

Do you have to have bought say the 6th of March so the transaction is settled after 3 days that is the 9th of March.

Cheers

I'm pretty sure that I bought MAP the day before the div and just collected it last week. So to answer your question, I don't think it has to have the 3 day settling period to qualify for the div.

As a sideline MAP happened to go up by about ~50% since then too. :D

I'm bragging but it's almost the only one I can about at the moment. :):banghead:

From my understanding, No you are not entitled to the divvie if you bought on the ex-divvie date. It goes to who held the stock at the close of trade the day before. The 3 day clearing thing does not come into it. Well it does, but you'll see a stock go ex div and the books close 4 days later, the books close 4 days later so the trades are all cleared.

Correct Family_Guy,

You can buy as late as the close the business day before exdiv day & be entitled to the dividend. The 3 day settlement is not important....the date on the contract note is important, as that is the decider for the dividend.

You can then sell as early as the open on exdiv day & still be entitled to the dividend even though settlements have not taken place.

Dividends

Hey everyone,

This has probably been asked already, but is probably very easy to answer, so I'll ask it anyway. I'm going to sell my Santos shares as at the moment I am choosing to have a greater risk appettite (if thats how ya spell it:confused:). They have announced a dividend with an Ex Div Date of 26/08/2009, a Record Date of 01/09/2009 and a Date Payable of 30/09/2009.

If I sell my shares say today, will I still receive the dividend. Cheers:)
