Hey all,

I am trying to make a purchase online from America using my cc. It keeps saying that my 3 digit security code is invalid. The shop says i need to check with the bank, and my bank says i need to check with the shop cause my card is working

Anyone else had similar problems?

Re: Credit Card Purchases

Sounds like a classic case of buck passing to me.

Re: Credit Card Purchases

Yeh i know. Which annoys me cause the purchase i want to make is fairly large so you would think someone would take the time to try and figure it out.

The store in the US said they have tried it manually also but it still declines. My only thoughts are the fact it is a Visa debit instead of credit card. But still i have never had the problem before

The american credit card systems are very pedantic. Often, when they say they need the name on the card as it appears on the cc, they really mean exactly, meaning middle name initials and spelling to be exactly the same.
This also holds true for the address it is billed too. So be sure you are giving them the exact address and everything.

Be real careful.

I have purchased online in the states twice and on both occasions had the items to be delivered to my hotel address (which I was to arrive at within the postage delivery period), thought this was the safest method. Both times the items were stolen from within the US postal sytem.

Thanks guys,

with regards to postage they are sending it via UPS air freight so that should be ok.

im still trying to work the payment out with them...

I think Visa debt still acts like a savings account, which means u still have the $800 or $1000 daily withdrawl limit, if the purchase is over that limit, it'll get declined.

Prawn,

You could always do a T/T get the bank account details go to your bank and get them to transfer it. Costs about $20 very easy, Ive done this many times when purchasing larger size orders.

My credit card has printed security digits on the back (italic print), chek it out it might be there.

Doesn't that only apply to cash advances. I've used visa and amex for much larger amounts than that. The vendor of the goods just has to get approval.

Greetings --

I am the author of a book on trading systems, which I sell from my web site and mail all over the world to a variety of residential and business addresses using the US Postal Service. I seldom use tracking numbers or insurance. There have been problems with less than 0.25% of the orders, and some of those were books that were borrowed from common delivery areas in apartment buildings and later returned. From my experience, the US Postal Service is not a major source of problems.

Thanks for listening,
Howard

Thanks everyone for your comments (and to Howard for dropping by )

I have resolved the issue and now wait to see how the post goes

Seriously im not worried about the postage side of things. But i've been warned...

I could be wrong, but I think all debit card purchases are treated as "cash advances", in which case the $800 or $1000 daily withdrawal limit may be the cause of the problem.

You could also do it online for about the same cost. I've sent T/T's regularly from my SGB account and I guess other banks would offer the same facility.

And apparently many US online sites are not accepting non-US credit cards anymore. Typical xenophobia again.

Well i dunno if anything changed, but i kept trying and it eventually worked

maybe they changed something on their end

I order stuff from the US all the time; never had a problem.
I have a Visa Debit card - and I've never had a problem with limits? Then again my daily transaction limit is something like 20k (for non-linked accounts)? I don't think the withdrawal limit applies...as debit cards get treated like credit that's instantly reimbursed? (Why else would there be a Credit option on eftpos transactions, that doesn't actually grant credit!)

Prawn, as someone else mentioned - some credit cards are not accepted by US vendors for some reason; I had an old ANZ credit card that had this problem. My current bendigo bank debit card has never had any problems world-wide...

But, depending on the site - you could use PayPal? Just as a pass-through for your credit card Many US shops accept it these days.

Does anyone know what's the best type of credit/debit card to use for overseas purchases (online shopping)? my visa charges 3% conversion fee and I thought maybe there's a better rate out there somewhere?
Also is it possible to load up a card (prepay) with GB pounds at times when the AUS dollar is high?

OnceBlue,

Is it for personaly or business transactions?

And as far as i'm aware you cant pre-purchase currency. You would need a currency account ot do that
