In 1966 John Lennon caused an uproar when he remarked in America that the Beatles "we're more popular than Jesus now."

If Barack Obama were to make the same claim, his millions of adoring fans no doubt would respond;

Yes you are!

Yes you are!

Yes you are!

I just don't get it....the mobs all congregating..waiting 6 hours, to see him on a big screen...just to be able to say...I was there...? But then again I never do what the mob does anyway...all very ho hum to me...
might watch the tennis if there are any worth watching today

It is a historic moment, when blacks are finally equal in the USA.

This will all be over within a week then it's back to business, THAT will be the interesting part.

What will 09' have in store for the US and us.

There is nothing wrong with National Pride, sort of lacking here in Australia. I have no particular liking for the US, any more than most - but the they way they "wear" their flag is nothing short of amazing.

Yep one could almost call it brainwashing...

Completely agree. I've stated many times that patriotism is nothing but that, and it is an infliction suffered by mostly fools.

Anti-Americanism is another problem shared amongst many of the foolish around the world as well. It's fine to dislike a Government, but how the hell can anyone hate (or even dislike) an entire nation? Because they give aid, go to war? You know, the funny thing is - if the US did nothing in all of these matters, the world would condemn them for that too. Idiocy sees no reason, and America just can't win, can they?

Gee Nyden, I'm glad I don't live next to you - Neighbourhood Watch obviously doesn't work in your street

The guy is different in many ways - I've read a few interviews and been impressed with his effortless way of including everyone and seeing all sides. That must be hard in Washington DC.

But it's all so razzamatazz you can't help but wonder how he is going to hold the whole thing together when reality kicks in and even Obama can't fix the mess. Then what is he?

I think America is setting itself up for a huge disappointment. I hope I am wrong.

You'd love to live next to me. I'm hugely considerate, very helpful, very quiet (never had, or attended a party in my entire life!), and very neat.

I care about people - individual people, not the land they live on. People are what make a country great - not land, nor patriotism.

It has nothing to do with patriotism. Huge crowds turned out for Billy Graham and Martin Luther King.

Americans are always looking for a new saviour. Especially one with the evangelical touch.

will you water my plants and feed my cats when we are on holidays in the Bahamas?

Obama still looks the person a country needs in an economy with a warm and sunny financial climate. This is a cold, windy and drab climate indeed, with nowhere to shelter from the storm.

He will be at the mercy of "advisors" heaven help the USA and us for that matter, but good luck to him.

As you say, "good luck to him". Australia is taking everything with a far to relaxed an attitude and may be shocked by the financial storm that arrives all at once. Only the weak Aussie$ will make the mountains seem more like exaggerated aberrations.

From a finance point I think it's strange that they are electing someone with no background in economics, even though we're in financial misery. But as Monty said it doesn't really matter anymore because of the circles and circles of advisers.

Wait! NEVER had or attended a party?

Seriously? Nyden you have no idea what you are missing out on. I have a party every quarter or so, Birthdays, Xmas parties, Halloween Party etc etc.

The way to do so without pissing off your neighbours is to invite them - or at least warn them so they can go elsewhere if they don't want to attend.

It's always very restrained - no drunken yobbo's at my parties. Last party we had.... 37 people (although about 17 of those were kids).

and people stayed and helped us clean up too!

Great Fun

Sir O

Go Obama! Next stop for Bush, Cheney, Rummy and Wolfie? THE HAGUE!!!

.. slam the door on that lot... AND DONT COME BACK!

Brad

One standout aspect of Obamamania is the expectations of the black community. They see the inauguration as the most significant event for blacks since Lincoln emanciated the slaves. They see it as the realisation of Martin Luther King's dream, and a bright new future.

It is doubtful if this warm inner glow can survive the cold light of dawn when the priorities of government will put the advancement of the blacks as a special case well down the list of priorities.

The colour of Obama's skin will lose all relevance.

The exuberance and hopes of the million or more fans on Washington streets was not reflected by Wall Street. The market took a more sombre view.
