With NCM out of the picture, NST and EVN will be the two biggest Australian gold miners on the ASX, but for how long? With further M&A in the winds, who is going to try and pick up either of these companies on the relative cheap?

Better plan may be for NST and EVN to start talking and combine their operations to take NCMs position as Australia's biggest gold company and stay out of the hands of those nasty Americans and Canadians stealing our assets.

Will end up having about 90Moz resources and 40Moz reserves and some copper.

Having said that, I own both, so it might be better if they get taken over at a 100% premium...

Question is, not holding either of these two, which one would gain more from a merger?

Perhaps it would have to be a takeover of EVN? Both sets of management probably want to hold onto their nice fat salaries. Not too many synergies except for Mungari / Kalgoorlie. But, it would be big and more diverse, less single operation risk. Big enough to add some more significant development plays like a DEG without any trouble. Scale isn't always good though I guess. Might just complicate things.

i hold both companies , and i would not particularly like a merger

they have two different strategies currently ( and are in different portfolios for me ) i hold both because they took different aths

i see NST still looking for acquisitions , and there are several other Australian-based gold producers that are under-performing and also some ASX listed gold producers that operate outside Australia

bigger is not always better , and if NST still feels compelled to expand , it maybe should diversify away from gold , it already has a massive coal resource on an existing lease , other options could be SVL ( i don't hold ) , AIS ( i do hold ) , while PAN ( i hold ) would be problematic with the current stake-holders .

to me size isn't everything , i would rather an efficient , cost-effective business that generates cash and product , and don't neglect S32 ( i hold ) in any moves in gold production , it still has a war chest and plenty of experience in the ranks ( but would probably prefer something like a copper/gold or silver/gold play to edge into gold production .

now this has popped up on my Bell otter news-feed

2325 GMT [Dow Jones]--Regis Resources's latest setback could make it more vulnerable to a takeover, Bell Potter analyst David Coates says in a note. Regis said 3Q gold output of 103,728 oz was lower than it had expected and reflected a slow ramp up of the new Duketon South Garden Well underground mine. Bell Potter had forecast 3Q production of 117,800 oz. "We view the fundamental, medium-term outlook as intact but that this disruption may make Regis a more vulnerable corporate target," says Bell Potter, which rates the stock a buy. ( i hold RRL )

that might work better for NST , unless EVN could see some cost synergies

My pick for the June Comp.

Dart didn't work but as I feel due to the issues, debt etc., particularly in the US gold could rise substantially so I put it in our big one.

Chart doesn't say much ATM so we shall see.

Sorry not contributing much of late but recently had an operation on my spine.
